Hi

Have to go over to LE18 area on Sunday. Can anyone recommend either some landscape, or country houses/arcitecture etc.

I need to practice panoramic shots.

Any advice appreciated.

Many thanks.

Lisa

There is a/ was an abandoned grey hound racing track in LE10 just down the round. I went and did a quick exploration visit and few pictures there. I went earlier this year, so im guessing it's still there.

Travelling in and around Leicester on Sunday may take a little longer than usual as many roads will be closed or restricted for the Leicester Marathon.

There's a Greyhound walk taking place here at 2pm on Sunday if you fancy coming along. 28 minutes away from Wigston according to Bing Maps and the countryside you'll pass through en route is beautiful.

Burrough Hill is the highest spot for miles and you'd get some great pano opportunities - the views across Leicestershire (and beyond on a clear day) are stunning. There are usually a fair few kite flyers too.

Hope you have a great day wherever you decide to spend it! :)

Foxton locks is a good place. The famous staircase locks, canal, barges and wildlife, I saw a kingfisher there last week.

Go up bradgate park. The tops are all cut off the top of the oak trees as a mark of respect when Lady Jane Grey (who was queen for about 30 seconds) was beheaded who is from there.

Agree with Bradgate Park, Park views, Deer and ruins for atmosphere

LE18 ? is that the south side of Leicester? not my patch I'm afraid

To the west of there out towards Hinkley and south towards Lutterworth its fairly flatish rolling countryside, a few vantage points but not easily "panoramic".

If you head north west from Leicester you get into the Charnwood Forest area, also known at one time as Little Derbyshire, that's a group of hills rising almost 1000 feet. Junction 22 off the M1 gets you into there, and it covers an area roughly upto J23. Bradgate park (as already mentioned) is in there, its got quite a high lump of rock on it called Old John with a folly castle on the top that lets you see how flat the area to the south is, Beacon Hill gives you views east and there's a little known vantage point at Markfield almost on top of J22 that gives views of flat countryside to the south west. However the Charnwood area is scenic in itself with lots of lumpy landscape and trees everywhere.

If you head east from LE18 then you are into a lesser known area stretching down from Melton Mowbray to Market Harborough and east to Rutland Water. Take a good map and drive around that triangle to the east of Leicester and there are some very good panoramic views to be found, especially if you get off the A47 and into the lanes.
Some good spots to try :
- Tilton on the Hill, on the B6047, to the north side of the village is a convenient layby, there is a magnificent old railway viaduct to the north at Marefield
- a couple of miles further north and to the east of the B6047 there is Burrough on the Hill, a pre-Roman hill fort on a high hill, carpark at the top. Wrap up well, the wind cuts through you up there.
But basically that triangle east of Leicester is chocabloc with panoramic possibilities at every turn.

a surprising find in the western suburbs of Leicester is Kirby Muxloe castle, think its English Heritics, not very panoramic, but a pleasant place, with a full wet moat, one ruined tower left and you can access up the top of the remains of the gateway, and lots of ducks . . .

Hi

Thanks ever so much for the replies. I've printed them off because it sounds like there's some great places to visit.

We got caught up in the marathon on the way there. We came back the scenic route. The weather over that side of the county was quite duff, fine rain and the sky was grey and colourless.

So, we drove around the Vale of Belvoir. The weather picked up and the sun came out.

I found a lovely church in Stathern and took some external shots of it along with some internal shots. Not panoramics but hey ho.

Thanks again.

Lisa
