I was just wondering if anyone had ever tried making their own mounts for their photos. What is the minimum equipment you would need?

I got an odd shaped print done and then spent weeks trying to get a mount, and had to have it specially cut in the end, but wondered how difficult it is to make a mount.

Thanks

Allan

I cut my own mounts - its not hard when you get the hang of it. A large cutting mat, a sharp bevel cutter and that runs along a rule and thats about it. You could try the budget equipment first (eg Hobbycraft?) before going on to the more professional equipment, depends on how much you're going to do.

Just remember - measure twice, cut once - once the hole's there it can only be made bigger...

I was thinking exactly the same thing in Ikea the other day.
We were looking at some frames, and the ones I liked, didnt have any mounts included, so I was wondering how easy it would be to make my own.

Will have a look at Hobbycraft.

The mounts are easy to do with the above mentioned equipment.
I personally struggled to work the measurements out at first, and had to be shown a few times (Dyscalculia) but if I can do it ... anyone can do it!

Theres an art/framing shop about a mile from me though, and the guy cuts them to size for me at a very reasnable price, so I havent done my own for a while now.

I did get a sense of satisfaction in doing my own though.

I cut my own, having used the hobby version of the mat cutters, and using the electric wall mounted cutters speed-mat (at a place i used to work)

I bought the following

Keencut Artist +

Keencut Oval 6

Pictures are the property of Keencut

Shop around and buy them secondhand from framing suppliers or ebay, I got mine for about 1/10th of their current selling price's and they are mint condition.

I have a Frameco matmaster system that is easy to use although I cant remember the last time I used it. My framer has an all singing and dancing machine and I have my stuff double mounted and it looks great...Ian

Thanks folks

Think I'm gonna have a go with a cheap cutter and ruler from fleabay. Next question - wheres the best website to get mount board? - we aint got any hobby shops in Carlisle.

You need an Art shop. There are 6 listed in Carlisle on Yell

I use a Logan cutter and the mounts come out really good (once you've learn't by making a few mistakes :D ). Remember to mark and cut on the back not the face of the mount. I am looking at getting the Longridge Duo as pointed out by Oy.

I used to do my own mounts but now have a deal with a local framimg shop and TBH find the couple of squid difference so small to be not worth the hassle of doing it myself.

Must be a great shop!

My local shop wanted £4.99 each for 20x16" mounts with a 16x12" aperture. I can cut two of those from an A2 mount board that costs me £1.99 - and I then have two 16x12" boards from which to cut 12x8" apertures - and so on. In all I get eight mounts in 4 sizes from a £1.99 board!

Was working in Manchester today so got to a hobbyshop next to the M6 at Preston on my way home. The ones in Carlisle are dreadful for this sort of thing, and 3 of the ones in the yellow pages are actually peoples houses (maybe ebay shops?)

So I got a Logan Model 2000 - and then found this great tutorial http://daystarvisions.com/Docs/Tuts/Matting/pg2.html so i'll have a go at the weekend :)

Thanks for all your help.
