Has anyone got any advice/ recommendations regarding photo mount adhesives?
I've just received some mounts and was intending to try and sell some prints at a local car boot sale. I'm in two minds on which way to go.
Is it acceptable to tape the print to the mount and leave the backing board free? The other option I was considering is using some 3M photo mount spray to attach the print and mount to the backboard. I prefer the second option but I'm concerned on how the spray will affect the print, both in the long and short term. Any advice or tales of past experiences will be greatly appreciated.

hi there i am new to this site but i can offer some advice i woudnt use the spray or tape the print to the mount. firstly the spray will bubble after time and ruin the print as its hard to get off later. also if you tape the mount to the picture if the mount is damaged or fades again it will be hard to remove later. to do it properly you should hinge the mount to the back board with conservation tape and t hinge the picture to the back board or you can get picture corners that are very good which holds all the corners .you can get a barrier board as well if needed . if these are to be sold to last that is the way to go.if you want to see how these are used visit a site called fineart.co.uk and it will show you all the different ways to mount correctly hope this helps.wayne rollinson

Cellotape the print to the mount frame

3M spray the backing board

Squeeze both together

Ideally insert in plastic cover

Sell to passer-by

Job done

I've used 3M in this way for years with no worries or complaints - which of course means someone will come along any second to tell you it 'eats' prints within 6 months and clients will be after you with knives drawn!

Appreciate the help guys.

Meresidemono, thanks for the link to fineart.co.uk, certainly makes some interesting reading. A lot of it did sound complicated though and may be a step or two above what I had in mind. I don't think my photos can be classed as fine art just yet. :D

Dave, that's the kind of lines I was thinking along. So you've had no problems with 3M spray, do you spray the whole of the backboard or just the parts that will be in contact with the mount?

hi again benroy some of what was in that site is complicated but it shows what can be done, i have just had a look at your gallery pictures and you have some nice work there, dave can i ask do you press your prints after spraying at all ,just curious, benroy on another route you can get a backboard thats already got the self adhesive on it made by colourmount

Quick squirt round the edges, and as my frames/mounts are often such as 7x5 in a 10x8 frame/ backing - not much if any spray may go onto the back of the print - and yes, they are pressed together

All I can add is - I still have some from years ago and they are fine, no client has EVER expressed concerns or mentioned a problem

They also tend to replace images in frames every few years too - so this is not archival mounting for the generations to come - it's disposable art/family images until they grow up a bit or the decor changes

That said, I still have shots I did of my first child 16 years ago in a frame mount done in the same way - and it's fine

If it's a limited edition £500 print you'd hope would appreciate in value 100 years after your death, take more care/spend more money/issue the client with guidelines on where it can/can't be displayed - otherwise, it's fine IMHO

I've already got all the backboards for the mounts I have, but the self adhesive backboard is something i'll keep in mind for the future, thanks
