anyone using photo mechanic 5

interested to know if the rotate crop works ok for setting landscape..

I am using PM5 - I can try to have a look for you. But I haven't had any issues when rotating crops this or that way..
So in that way I think it could be one of those things that 'just works' and I haven't paid attention to ;-)

I have been using fsxiewer to choos epics
photoshop to edit
photomechanic to caption..

in photoshop i just do auto contrast..maybe some exposure comp and/or sharpen... and most important rotate crop.... photomechanic didnt have that feature for a long time..

so could I now drop the other two and use just photo mechanic?

unfortunatly it wont let me use the demo...:(

Just had a play with the crop thing on PM5 - seemed to be able to crop and rotate the crop.

The way I use it is just select pics in PM5 - then just CMD+E to open them in Photoshop - caption in PM5
As yourself - I am sure Photoshop is a total overkill for most of our pitch-side editing.. but seems to be the workflow that one is used to and it's hard to kick habits ;-)

But I am not sure you can do your contrast/exposure/sharpen in PM5 ??
Now I could be totally wrong with that...

I use PM5 and PS for editing, again PS is just for the small tweaks, crop, levels, sharpen if needed then back into PM to caption and its off. Never tried the crop in PM

cheers guys... gonna keep with v 4.5 for now then... ta :)

I never bother to use the crop (or any other edit) functions in PM LR/PS is far better for that.

However, you'd speed up your workflow a bit by using PM to ingest, select, caption & then export to ACR (you can set it to edit Jpegs & it's faster than the full blown PS) for editing.

I do use PM to injest.. locked files only.. I just find fsviwer easier to skim through and tag.. but am going to try and get out of that habit...

Never understood why anyone would pay $100 for PM when it wont even crop, never understood why anyone would use it for captioning either, it was a tool produced for so called "elite" pros but has somehow filtered its way down to almost anyone, bit of snobbery and wanting to look "like a pro", if im honest IMHO its a piece of junk

the only other way i know is LR and I tried that.. looks like a toy. couildnt even get a pic to edit.... what other all in one downloader (by locked pics) tagger and captiopner with code replce is there then ?

None, not with the code replacement anyway, but is code replacement genuinly any quicker than importing an XMP file direct into an image and just manually tweaking a players name and who he's tackling, not for me it isnt and unlike PM and code replacements it only involves a maximum 2-3 minutes work pre match to set up the XMP file

As an aside mate, look at the Motorola Moto G mobile phone, cheap as chips and bloody superb for around £100, check all the online reviews.

I believe Tobers does all his imports, edits and captions in LR and if I remember correctly he has also set up the code replacements.

and? already discounted LR mate :)

I am happy with photo mechanic.. just wondering what garys alterative was as PM seems to be software from the devil himself? :)

XNView to view then import locked pics directly into Photoshop Elements to crop, rotate, import XMP file with captioningand save to ftp folder

Never got to grips with Lightroom, looks like a nice shiny car but doesn't do it for me.

like playing wiht a toy.. i ahd no idea where my pictures where... i couldnt seem to just find one and open then save it... seemed to be more about how it looks than how it works... gave up..

PS looking into the phone thing.. have you got one? 159 quid from argos with 16gb

I picked up a brand new one locked to tesco for £100, paid £4 for an unlock code off ebay, its brill mate for the price, every bit as quick as my lads iphone 5 and the wifes galaxt s3, dont get it mixed up with the brand new 4G version which isnt yet available in the UK

With software, Apple vs Windows, Canon vs Nikon...
A lot of it comes down to what one is used to and what works for you..
I started with PS to edit images... have tried few others over the years.. but I just feel familiar with PS and felt the other software probably did everything same.. but just felt 'wrong'
You say to get good pics in dark games only with 1DX/D4 and 400mm f2.8 IS II ... but I've seen togs use Canon 1D MKIIn and 400m f2.8 non-IS ... and get better than you do..
One says Apple works faster than Windows PC and why would anyone buy Windows... but once again, matter of taste.

For me - PhotoMechnic (when I bought it first years ago) was MUCH faster in browsing through the images than what ever alternatives I had at the time Bridge or such.
So I got used to using it to browse, rate, caption my photos... and maybe there are cheaper and better options out there.. but .. for me PM just does the job the way I want it and am used to.

As KIPAX said... he tried Lightroom and couldn't figure where his images were saved, etc.. same happened to me.. so back to PM and knowing where everything was :-)

I started my career as a graphic designer, and remember using photoshop as far back as '93 the only thing missing for photographers was an engine for RAW files, this duly arrived and life was complete. :) until LR came along and blew me away.
One piece of software that could catalog, tag, edit, crop and export to a remoter server all at the click of a couple of mouse buttons, all that on the first tab ( Library module ) what's not to like! if you need more sophisticated tools for image manipulation you have them, if you need even more you can still export to PS.
I think with some of you guys it's a case of can't see the wood for the trees. It may look like a micky mouse piece of software, but it's not.
Lightroom was designed for pro togs like you KIPAX but you may have to change a few things you have become acostumed to, to get the full benefit.
I understand your under pressure to wire your images as fast as possible, but chimping your pictures (1), ingesting, tagging (2), exporting to PS to crop and process (3) and then FTPing to a remote server (4) when all of that can be done in LR, surely must be the way to go?

I think with some of you guys it's a case of can't see the wood for the trees.
It is for me certainally, i judge something too quick probably and as an old codger find it difficult to change, or want to change, however my method works for me so i see no need to change.

But what I'm trying to say is that I used PS for over 20 years and for high end image manipulation it's still the best in the business but I ditched it in favour of LR because of it's simplicity to do everything like cataloging, data tagging, editing and exporting all in one self contained package.

Do you mean Fsviewer - Faststone?

oops yeagh.. brilliant bit of software have used for years.. even sent in a donation :)
But if you put info into the IPTC in PM then edit in faststone it removes the IPTC info! is there a way round it?

does it? I never knew that.. I have never used fsviewer for editing.. i use it for browsing and tagging and I also use it to batch watermark and or batch resize.... it doesnt strip IPTC when doing those functions..

If you ingest your photos in PM and caption them, then edit them in Faststone it will remove your details -name,address,copyright info.I did not realise it and I had been sending photos off to publishers without details in.I have tried every setting on Fasstone to stop it doing this but it always strips out the contact info! It's not just the" save for web" Gary. I now edit first then caption in PM.It's the one failing that fastsone has.

Kipax you go and test it and make sure it has not removed your contact details.

I have just used(now) PM to caption and put contact details in using the IPTC stationary pad and then used edit in fastone option.I resized the photo, saved it to documents, then went to documents and opened the photo in photoshop ,went to file info and clicked contact details and they have gone but are still in the un resized photo.Try it now and you will see-it removes the contact details. I just tried resizing in batch and it strips out the contact info also!

OK having never used it liek that.. just tried it and yes indeed it does strip out name/address details... all fields with ASTERIX in PM are stripped all others left OK

The fields its strips.. not sure they are standard.. just loaded the pic in photoshop and those fields dont even show up....

You have to be careful because photoshop is what the publishing industry use to seek the contact details to pay you and fastone has stripped them out.You check your batch converted photos to see if they have still got contact details in.If resizing AFTER PM I now use "Light image resizer" it puts the watermark on as well and does not strip out the contact info.

This looks good.I have a 15yr old mobile and have been waiting for these type to get cheaper.I do not know anything about them.If I bought this phone is there a way of doing pay as you go as I don't want contract as I send about 2 texts a week and make very few phone calls. It would be mainly to have internet access?
