I am off to Rome in April, and having never been there before, was wondering if any one could advise me where is good to shoot? Thanks, Tim

Just about everywhere! Its one of the most photogenic cities I have ever visited with an excellent subway system. It is a bit like coming across a museum exhibit every time you turn a corner!

Lucky you = so much to see, from the classical views of the sights to the back streets and it's so easy to get around (not too far to walk, buses/metro busy but not too expensive with a pass).
A couple of ideas:
Try walking along the river: some interesting architecture as well as view from San Angelo towards St. Peters
Rooftops are interesting if you can find a viewpoint
Not to forget that Rome does political demnstrations really well if anything is happening while you're there, marches usually finish at Piazza Popoli
Piazza Narvona;day and night (but lots of hawkers)
Campo del Fiori for it's morning market

enjoy:thumbs:

I love the Pantheon.

Good views of the Colosseum along the via dei Fori Imperiali. There's a nice raised area on the right as you walk towards the Colosseum up some steps, where there is a nice plateau to take pics from. Also above the Metro station across the road from the Colosseum. If you are there on a Sunday, the via dei Fori Imperiali is closed, letting you safely take pics on the road looking towards the Colosseum.

If you are there during Easter the city may be a bit busier than usual, and the may have an event involving the Pope happening around the Colosseum. There was when I was there during Easter 3-4 years ago.

There are good views on the bridges looking towards the Vatican. Good views of the Castel San't Angelo from across the river, and along the bridge towards it too.

A lot of people flock to the Spanish Steps just to hang around. There's not much opportunity for pics when it is full of people imho. Unless you like people pics of course. ;)

There's the Trevi Fountain, which is also very busy, but you can get some nice pics. And it is just amazing to see how they have this huge fountain hidden amongst the buildings.

If you were there for any length of time, I'd take a trip to the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana in the EUR part of the city. Sometimes called the Square Colosseum, I think it is a stunning building, sadly not used. It's in the middle of a business area, but go there on a Sunday, and it's virtually deserted. :)

There are nice views across the city from the dome of St Peter's Basilica. A bit of a tough trek up there, but the views are worth it.

Just walking around the ancient part of the city will bring up some interesting pics. Depends how long you are going for.

You can see some of my pics from Rome here, and I've put the locations on the accompanying maps.

I'm going to Rome next week with a group of students. This was planned months back. Early March, we thought. That'll be a good time. No-one will have much reason to go to Rome in March. It'll be relatively quiet... :help:
