I don't currently back up my photo library but want to because I don't want to lose all my photos (duh), but was just wondering how everyone chooses to back up there photos? I was looking at doing it online just because it's easier but didn't know what was the easiest/best way to go about doing it?

I use online and spare HD's. Works for me!!

i use a 3tb external HD and SyncToy. Every couple of weeks i'll run it and let it sort all my files out and back everything up to the HD

I dont trust all this cloud stuff for a variety of reasons.

One set on my PC, two more copies on external USB drives, one copy on a RAID enabled NAS. Total overkill I know, especially when you see how bad they are, but storage is cheap, my memories irreplaceable.

I have a working copy on a laptop, which is backup online via Creative Cloud. My laptop is also backed up using Time Machine, and I sync it daily with a desktop machine. I also have a large disk, where once a month or so I dump everything across (including all of the 'deleted' RAW files that never got post processed). I used to think I was OK with two external drives, but I once had a situation where both died on me at the same time .... the odds of that must be minimal, but not zero obviously! :(

I have a 12Tb Nas solution, plus additional 3Tb usb drives. Main solution is backed up to the NAS every weekend using a simple mirror copy without delete.
3Tb additional backups are manual, ad hoc and kept offsite

Cloud wouldn't work for me due to the size of data

In my opinion an external hard-drive or NAS (depending on how large your files are) are the best options. You can use a program such as freesync to backup everytime you plug it in or on a schedule. RAID is for redundancy, it isn't a form of proper backup.

Hi Lewis, I back up to three external HDs all kept at different locations.

Is that "freefilesync" - i use this as it works pretty well - i have 2 internal drives for daily syncs and a usb drive for monthly syncs with the usb drive kept off site.

Thanks Everyone think im just going to put them on more HDs

Why is online easier? Seems like more of a hassle to me - not to mention cost. Just get a bunch of hard drives disks. Stick a copy in a different room / house / office if you like as well for extra peace of mind.

The advantage of online is you always have an up to date copy off site, and it is another layer of a backup strategy. Online backup also does versioning pretty well.

I use time machine, rotate the discs off site. And also use crashplan for an extra layer

I always have an up to the hour copy on site via time machine and off site via crashplan. And also another offsite copy on hard drive that is generally no more than a month out of date.
