Photo ideas

Having been a member of the forum for a couple of months, with two purcases under the belt, I've noticed that a number of 'typical' photos keep coming up. I've made a note of some of the more common ones but has anyone anymore.

I've going to try and have a go at each one to see how I get on. I'm just about to put an order in for a wireless flash trigger with Flash in the Pan so I can try the water droplet photo!!

Here is what I've got so far

Waterfall (Blured)
Seascape (smooth)
Water drop
Multiple exposures (Self portrait)
Light trails
HDR
Tilt photography (Toytown)

So what's missing?

Sounds like you're ticking them off a list for the sake of it. How about photographing the things that interest you personally? :)
 
it's always fun to share and learn new photography techniques

and you left smoke of your list Badger1 probably the easiest and least kit intensive of the lot after HDR :thumbs:

And then you can settle into the "should i get a lens with IS or not" debate.
When you're a real 'tog you can join in the full frame or crop discussion but don't be distracted by the "how much should i charge" thread :p

I guess it looks like that but by trying the various 'techniques' I reckon I'll learn more - is that such a bad thing?

Also by trying these things I may become more interested in them. A chicken and egg situation I guess - ooh another photo idea!!

I'm relatively new to DSLR so I want to experience as much as possible and by asking the question I thought I amy get some more ideas.

I like what your doing here by trying to broaden your horizons. Top show.

My current project at the moment is trying to master my new Canon 580EX II flash, as its too easy to just put it and the camera into automatic and take good pics. I'm trying to master fill-in and also trying to use natural reflectors such as walls etc to create good contrast and depth in peoples faces.
 
i started off with my DSLR in Manual mode permanently. not even switched it to Auto. now i'm working out aperture and shutter priority modes...

when my 430ex turns up it's going to go into manual mode first to work out how to use it.

my technique is just taking pictures of stuff i like, and if the picture comes out crap, i work out why and try again !

An excellent way to develop your skill IMHO :thumbs: also enter competitions or at the very least try to get the shots as it really helps to focus you on the details of the subject!

:thumbs: You may need to discuss Noise somewhere in between those though :D Slip it in just after the crop debate has ended :naughty:

My 430exII turned up last week and the differnce to the photos is unbelievable. I'll be using this weekend to have another play and maybe get round to reading the manual!!

Don't neglect your local homeless either. Just remember to run their portraits though every piece of software you have to make them 'gritty'. ;)

More seriously, if you want to test how well you know certain techniques; set yourself harsh time limits. Like, give yourself 20 minutes to go out and get a good shot of someone, or a certain thing. Even better, do it when the light is less favourable, it'll make you think about what you know, and when and how to apply it.

That's a great idea - yesterday I finished work early and the sun was out so I didn't go out with the camera - maybe I should have!

Not at all :)

May I also suggest you experiment with using shallow depth of field. It's something compact cameras just can't do well but is really fun to play around with on an SLR

your all set then mate :)

an off camera cord or triggers would be advantageous
pm Flashinthepan for prices.
all you really need now is rechargeable batteries and the time and inclination to experiment :thumbs:

water is a great place to start.

go and play with your kitchen taps, vary the shutter speed, vary the flow of the water, learn to combat the highlights from your stainless sink etc etc.

use us for inspiration but realise that complete how to recipes are for dullards :p

big game hunt
i fall into that category...loads of furry waterfalls and cranked up shots of buildings
the ones i like the most however are those i took when i felt good and those simple elements seemed...part of me..
a photograph like a painting ...1000 words etc...1000 memories and flashbacks
