Affinity 2 is probably your best bet, a lot like PS but no contracts, so you buy outright sometimes it comes up on offers for around £30ish but at full price at the moment of £67 but you can get a 30 day free trial to see if it's for you, then they may even send you an offer. Link below

Its now showing just a 7day free trial, but I got this link, which may be a 30 day one below.

IrfanView

ACDSee Gemstone 12 was free, maybe still is

Very basic - irfanview is tiny, super-fast and easy to use.
More advanced - DigiKam is able and effective.

That would be Microsoft Photos, free from the app store.

Just wondering if Photoshop Express is worth a try…

I'd second Affinity Photo!

I've just had to use Microsoft photos for work - used to use Irfanview but that's not on the approved software list now. MP makes me want to punch people, it's just so clunky and unintuitive.

Thanks for the heads-up ref MP
I tried GIMP - very complex
I’ll try irfanView next

For quick editing crops, curves, white balance etc for my social media I use Faststone image viewer

Affinity Photo 2 ... rather a befuddling & over-complex solution for someone just wanting a replacement for Elements?!

You have used it then ?

If you want basic and free, perhaps try Paint.NET

Yes, I have, but let's not distract from the business at hand ... the remit isn't about what works for ourselves, but about what might work for the enquirer.

The crop tools can be a little clunky but Faststone is a decent option for basic editing.

Windows platform only and free/shareware.

to EVERYONE

thanks for all the suggestions
I've now tried quite a few -----and settled on

......NX Studio.....

now to Open a huge can of worms as I search for a decent FREE AV program on top of Defender
I already use MBAM and SAS....both with a LifeTime subscription

For info:- I still use (very occasionally!) Elements 2 and 5.
They have been on all our PCs since they were first published leading up to our current Windows 11 machines both Home and Pro.
I'm a Capture One user after using various free ones over the years.
I only update this type of programme every few years.

Darktable seemed to be the best free programme to me.....at the time.

For what it's worth!;)
