Edit My Images
Yes
Hi,

I was wondering if there is an easy way to backup all my EDITED images in lightroom to an external device.

I guess I could just export them all to a folder of my choosing, but is there an option to do this further down the line and not to re-export files I have backed up already?

I am not worried about the originals on this catalogue, I just want a file of the edited pics....

Cheers

If you want to keep the edits intact you have two options:

Write the metadata and processing changes to either the XMP sidecar file or the DNG file, depending on what you are keeping them as. There is an option to do this in the Lightroom settings. Then sync the contents of the folders to where you want to back up to. However, if you are storing your files as native raw you will need to make sure you back up the XMP sidecar files too, as this is where the processing data will be stored, with DNG files this is embedded into the file.

The other option, as you say is to export them, but you would probably need to re export them all each time.

OK thanks, so I have ticked the 'Automatically write changes into XMP'

How do I sync the folder with all my pics, edited, onto my external HDD - whilst keeping the pics where they are at the moment (so the external disk is just a backup)

Lightroom doesn't do anything with images until you "Export" them. It will then render them to the parameters you set. The Edits that you make are simply a set of instructions stored in a database which are then applied at the export stage.

The best way to backup in Lightroom is to copy the image files and the LR catalogue ( the database) to an external drive. Lightroom will backup the Catalogue for you if you set that as one of it's start up options. You then have to either use a backup utility, or manually copy the files to you backup device.

If you tell it to Lightroom does write the changes to the DNG/sidecar file though ;)

With regards to syncing are you on OS X or Windows?
