weekly Photo 52 - 2012 - Donnie - Week 33 TIME - posted Tuesday 21st August

Well worked, obviously took time and effort which was rewarded

Hi Paul

Sweet....like this shot...nice DOF , white's white...& on theme

Sigh...think it'd be more curse than sigh for me  but yeah , fits the theme...for me the darkness adds to it...so well done mister

BLIMEY !!! How have I missed this thread

Direction - A good pic, obviously well on theme, with all the needed elements - Nice :)

Fear - Great subject, Real good DOF and like the stacked papers. Spot on !!!

Sigh - Good subject, I certainly see the sigh and also imagie a few swear words too :D

Sweet - Nice shot, I like the definition of the lettering and the DOF is spot on - Good all round

Less than 4 minutes to go before my self imposed rules give me a penalty shot :eek:

secure by Donnie Canning, on Flickr

I've been struggling with this shot, well not this actual shot but the idea behind it!

I couldn't find a padlock / shackle anywhere that I thought deserved a photo, no forbidding gates locally, no security men about to photograph.

Finally thought a nice night shot of Bedford Prison only a couple of miles from the front door will do as it's an old gaol with big imposing doors, however, what I never realised was that they moved the entrance to the prison to the new wing on the side and there's nothing to make it look secure and "prisony"
Yes I could have shot the big imposing doors on the old entrance but without some indication that it's a prison I don't feel the story would be told, so that was that idea scuppered.

Next I thought a shot of a credit card on a keyboard with a website open that is showing the secure website padlock icon! Breakthrough, that'll do nicely, use a nice bit of depth of field etc and it'll be perfect.
Except, it appears that all the browsers have decided to move the icon to the top of the screens near the address bar!! Arrghh, so in the end I've gone with a close up using my extension tubes of the secure button of my wireless router sat in the dining room!

I think it works.

Cheers all, Yep I can see what you're saying about the bars and the light patch in the upper left there Alan. I did try a layer mask to subdue it a little but then it looked a bit too "flat".

I'd not thought about a square crop I have to admit, too late now though.

Photo 52 - 2012 - Week 6 - Industry by Donnie Canning, on Flickr

This is Stewartby Brickworks a few miles away from where I live.

This brickworks closed in 2008 and now stands effectively derelict though there is still some form of activity within the confines of the land.

It houses the largest kiln in the world and in the '70's Stewartby produced 20% of all bricks in England.

PP wise I added a levels adjustment layer to make the grey sky a little whiter and the snow too, I know it's had the effect that the snow's nearly blown out completely but I think it still works reasonably well as you can see the bits of vegetation trying to poke through.

Additionally, getting the colours right for the chimneys and buildings made the small hut in the foreground ( fire hydrant storage) really orange/red so I added a hue / saturation layer, reduced the saturation to get the right colour then inverted the mask and painted back the hut so it all matched.

Hi Paul

Industry....love the colors in the brickwork...the image fits the theme & the bleakness adds to the derelict feeling that was once alive with industry

Now , it may just be me but the so bland sky just doesn't work...at least I don't think it does  keep looking at it , one minute it's fitting , next minute it's not...can't help thinking that some cloud detail & possibly B&W would give a more powerful image? Dunno , bit flumaxed

Having said that , it's your 52 & you need to be happy with the image as thats what matters

Sorry not stopped by for a bit.

Sweet - would just like a tad more space in the shot but everything else is bang on!

Secure - good idea and good take on the theme, excellent DOF.

Industry - really like this one, nice colour contrasts and a great building to shoot I expect!

I'd have been happier if I'd gotten there on Saturday, first clear sky day we've had in a week :shake:

I am pretty happy with it though, the blandness I think adds to the dereliction, at least to a degree.

I tried it in B&W I have to admit but really wanted to keep the colour of the brickwork.

Cheers, yes it's a fantastic place and my first visit but got cut short when security saw me :-)

Hi, Donnie, sigh is an absolute cracker. Body language is spot on. For me, it's a tad dark and I can't really make out the flat tyre. Overall, this is a great take

Sweet, well composted and nice depth. I'd like to see the front polo a tad sharper.

Secure, the weakest of the 4 for me. I'd like to see the LH button and grey part at the top cropped out.

Industry, well composed with nice foreground interest...but, as is the case on these cloudy days, the sky has really :bang:

Cheers and keep it up...

Hi

Secure - works well, a good take on the theme.

Industry- great photo, this was something I wanted to try and capture but just never got the time

Matt

Hi Paul, apologies for not spotting your thread earlier.

Direction - lovely shot, great take on the theme.

Fear - again cracking shot, great dof and certainly bang on theme

Sigh - First shot just doesn't work for me sorry, but the 2nd one definitely works, cracking shot.

Sweet - great lighting on that, used to great effect to define the lettering

Secure - again spot on with the theme, great dof too.

Industry - like the idea and the bleakness of the theme with the snow and the towers, only thing that doesn't work for me is the sky, but hey the one thing we can't do anything about is the wonderful British weather.

Secure - Liking the composition, angle and dof, i'd be tempted to either clone out or crop the bright light to the left, other than that great shot

Industry - Real nice, again like the composition and the subject, with the dull sky and snow the brickwork is well emphasized

Cheers again all for the feedback :-)

I've finally gotten my Root picture today too and here it is.

Photo 52 - 2012 - Week7 - Root by Donnie Canning, on Flickr

I wanted to find some exposed tree roots for this one but was more difficult than I thought it would be.
I ended up walking round the local Priory Marina and on my way back to the car feeling defected spotted a small dried out culvert with this trees roots growing through and seperating the brickwork.
I noticed the sun hitting the trunk and thought it'd be a reasonably nice picture and on theme but I also used some fill in flash too.

Post processing involved a slight crop, a levels layer adding a strong contrast curve layer then a lightening levels layer.

Really like this shot, has a lovely rustic feel to it.
Would have liked to see a bit more root, but as you stated yourself 'was more difficult than I thought it would be' so ill let you off that one.

Cheers guys :)

I'm pleased with the shot but couldn't find a way to frame it so more of the root would be more visible, or I could have but then it was too large and there was no scale if you see what I mean, so ended up with this shot which almost reminded me of a bit of a urban exploration shot as I discovered the dried out old brick tunnel / culvert at the same time which I liked.

I did take this one as I was amazed at how the roots have grown through and almost swallowed up some of the bricks

Hi Paul, I have looked at all your pics but apparently never bothered to comment:bonk:

I'll start now with sweet. Nice detail on the lettering and good lighting for the shadows.
I like the bleak industry shot but not sure if the sky is a little too white:shrug:

Your first root shot looks almost like a night shot but cracking detail on it. Fill flash is still an area I need to work on!
I like the second shot too with the roots through the bricks:thumbs:

A fantastic industry shot. That is a big array of kilns.
I like your 2nd root with the bricks close up, whereas the 1st one is a bit distracting with so much in it.

I like the lot. Secure, Industry & Root. Root especially as it has that old feel from the brickwork.

Hi Paul, I can only appologise for not taking the time to comment on any of you're weeks so far, I honestly thought I had caught you so not sure how you slipped under the radar.

Direction - Bang on theme and a very nice picture, I agree that the pencil looks a little placed and I dont think it adds to the image at all. The image would be just fine without it :)

Fear - Nice take on the theme, spot on again. Good DOF

Sigh - I really like the thought behind this one, very original and certainly something I can relate to. Agree that it's lacking a certain something. Maybe needs a little more exposure to bring the colour out.

Sweet - Lovely DOF and bang on theme and nice composition as well. Good work.

Secure - Again like the DOF and subject matter, certainly says secure to me :)

Industry - Another good take on the theme and although I like the colour of the bricks there is something missing in the sky, its just a little too plain. Wouldn't mind seeing a back and white or even an HDR version of this one.

Root - Prefer the first photo personally but maybe it should of been shot a little lower. Difficult theme though I thought so good on you for getting a picture up :)

Appologies again, I have subscribed now so shouldn't miss you out again.

Keep up the good work
