i have an iphone 3G and its time to upgrade...

my dilemma is do i stay with apple as my music etc is on itunes or do i go down the android route and download something to convert movies etc

my other half has a samsung SII which is a fantastic phone but the pull of the iphone 4 is strong as i do love the user interface and am used to using this

would be interested to hear from those who have moved across (either way)

:thinking::thinking::thinking::thinking::thinking::thinking::thinking:

I used to have a iPhone 3G, then went to Blackberry and now have a Sony Xperia Arc.

The Android was good for the first week, and then it got so incredibly glitchy I was really disappointed. However with the latest firmware upgrade in the last 2 weeks it is now really a good phone to use, and the interface is now super fast and a pleasure to use.

I think Android has more promise than the Apple phones - iphone is an iPhone. Will always be restricted by Apple's grip.

However if you want to be safe then stay with the iPhone. I personally chose the Sony because of its big screen (actually makes quite a difference browsing internet or watching videos) and because it cost me nothing.

I too once had an apple 3gs but have now seen sense and moved on to android my current phone is the Samsung Galaxy s2 and what a phone makes the iphone look like a washed out toy.I have had the Sammy for about 6 weeks with gingerbread firmware and have never noticed any glitching or slow down compared to the iphone.
The Sammys screen is so colourful, vivid and bright, the camera and hd video is top quality and with its big screen videos are totally watchable.

I have had all 4 generation iPhone and couldn't recommend them enough, yes they are typical Apple and locked down but with Jailbreaking now legal it opens the phones up to additional features and possibilities. That said a friend has the new HTC Sensation and that is a very good phone. If I was to upgrade now, I'd wait to see what the iPhone5 is like and how much it cost. Or go for the HTC Sensation :)

My android phone is fantastic. Love it (HTC Desire HD)

As to which to choose it depends what you do with it. THe Apple allows connectivity that no other device can compare to - Cars, hi fi, speaker sets etc. Yes others can too but not as neaty.

Hard choice - but for the price Android wins hands down and it does flash! That was important to me.

I would hold off for a few weeks, I am in the same boat and there are very strong rumours that Apple will be sending invite out from the 14th September for an event which will launch the new iPhone. If nothing appears I think I am jumping ship to the Motorola Atrix

I can't help but think that jailbreaking is going to be extremely hard to do once IOS5 is released with the over the air cloud based updates.

I switched from an iPhone4 to a Samsung Galaxy S2 and whilst the built quality isn't as nice it's infinitely customisable, the screen is gorgeous and the apps are growing on a daily basis, I honestly can't see myself going back to an iPhone and I'm a big apple fan boy.

Android is good, but think with the iPhone 5 due anytime in the next month or so you should wait and see *** it's like.. And iOS 5 is due soon too, new features look great!!

I had the same dilemma with a tablet, iPad or android based one..decided on the iPad, glad I did! It's not just music/films that'd need sorting, but also, all your apps would need to be re-purchased on android...for me, that's what swung it..I have loads of great apps, didn't fancy having to buy them all again for android.

IOS5 has already been jailbroken so no worries there!

I believe it is only the beta version that has been jailbroken unless things have changed, and its still a tethered jailbreak meaning the phone has to be connected to the computer evertime it has to be restarted.

I have an Android phone and although it's just the slow HTC Wildfire, I love it. Love it more than I ever loved my iPod Touch (an iPhone without the capability of phoning people).

I moved from an Iphone to the Samsung Galaxy S 2 a couple of months ago.

There are a few things I miss from the Iphone such as the more polished interface and there are definately better apps available in the marketplace but I have to say the the flexibilty of the android device more than make up for it. Particularly for me the fact that I can plug it into any computer and copy music and videos from or to it and install a browser that runs flash and will identify me as a pc so I dont have to use the cut down mobile versions of websites.

i supose in the end its your money you takes your choice , me i have an iphone 4 and a ipad 2 32 gig and love them both but im greedy.

If you`re with Vodafone, keep your phone and get a iPad2 for nothing!! Ordered mine last thursday morning and it was delivered on friday, very happy.

Agreed with that! The fact that I can just wack my HTC into the computer and bung music directly onto it without having to use some proprietary program is a big plus. Flexibility!

It's like its always been (and yes i own android and apple so no fan boy comments)

Get an android if you want to mess about change settings and easily transfer music, but give it a few weeks and it becomes slow, glitchy, pain in the arse changing things, setting up things.

Apple just works, straight out the box easy to use and easy to configure, with IOS5 coming with the imessage and various other things it will be in another class.

One thing to watch out for with Android is manufacturers/networks putting their own overlays onto the handsets, then not releasing updates to them when Google do. This has been a pain with SE and Orange dragging their heels and not making updates available over the air either.

If you already have your media/apps in iTunes my advice would be to stick with Apple and if you aren't in a hurry to upgrade there's meant to be a new iPhone out soon, which will probably mean deals on the iPhone 4 if you aren't fussed about having the latest hardware.

Can't say I've witnessed any of this on my own HTC phone or the dozens of other phones running Android between my friends, family and in the office.

I haven't had to set anything up except from the initial half hour or so after I got the phone, and any other time spent after that is just because I'm exceptionally picky about what goes where.

Android is based on a Linux kernel too.

I've just moved from iPhone 3g to HTC sensation. So glad I did.

Iphones are great. Theyre solid phones, software and hardware is well done. But they are restricted which is why so many people jailbreak them.

Androids are tweekable, and there's a vast choice of manufacturers and handsets so you can pick one that suits your lifestyle. HTC sensation is a quality phone I chose it over iPhone 4 because its a dual core, and its super fast.

I would wait and see what apple are working on when it comes to iPhone 5 or 4.5 whatever the rumours are calling it. You know the contracts are going to be silly pricey though.

Many thanks for all the responses !!!

I have gone for the Samsung s2 and loving it !!!!

Although I do have to say that I'm disappointed with the.music player Interface but am sure that its just a case of getting used to it

But you still plug the phone into the computer, just dragging it to a phone rather than dragging files into the software, surely it is the same thing?

What tweaks can you do on Android or a Jailbroken iPhone that offers more to the end user? to me (with v limited knowledge of this kind of stuff) It just seems to be for people who like fiddling with things.

I went from Android (Hero upgraded to 2.1) to iPhone 4.

I miss some of the widgets that you can customise the desktop with - having switches to easily toggle wi-fi, gps etc is useful, and having a calendar widget / weather widget is also useful.

If iOS 5 takes some of these ideas I'll be happy.

Android has always had a not quite finished feel to it, maybe the geeks love that?

it is and it isn't... it just means you that you have to use iTunes to sync the phone, which could mean changing your usage habits and software to suit it.

With HTC it doesn't matter what I do on the computer, as long as the file types are right I just drag n' go. I prefer having the choice rather than having an obligation to use a specific program.

On the contrary, I do actually use iTunes to manage and play my music, but this is through choice as I do prefer it to WMP.

I can give a reason why.

A stock iPhone 2G and 3G couldn't record video. Well... Apple didn't allow it. They only allowed it when the 3Gs came along. A jailbroken 2G and 3G however could be enabled to record video. The hardware capability was there, it was just locked out by Apple. That and other similar reasons is why people would want to customise under the hood. Otherwise you had to cough up the dough for a new phone and new "features" many of which were possible on the older hardware.

What Android phone do you have?

I've had my Desire HD for almost a year and have lots of apps, photos and video stored on it but I've not noticed any degradation in speed at all.

If I had one thing I don't like about the HTC it's the battery life - seems to have gotten beter with age ddly but still not brilliant - I just bought a second battery and a quick switch and it's fine again :)

Desire also worked straight out the box oddly enough too :) And I can access my flash web site :)

Well by tweaking my HTC desire with a custom ROM I now have the ability to overclock for performance and underclock to save the battery. Even better the clocking can be automatically controlled by th phone depending upon set parameters. So can easily get 2 days out of the battery.

I can now also record in 720p mode too.
When benchmarking the phone it is now 5 times faster than a stock desire.

As I said before and will say again it's each to their own at the end of the day. I'm no fanboy. People love apple and android for different reasons.
I'm not setting out to change or sway opinions, someone asked what tweaking achieves, and this is what it does for me and I'm happy with that.
Couldn't give a monkey's what other people think, if I'm happy that's the main thing.
If other people are happy with apple or just not tweaking their phone at all then I'm happy for them too.

I managed to give my HTC HD7 a bath a while back, but didn't want to buy back into a top-end smartphone until Windows Phone 7 Mango and iPhone was out.

I got a Motorola Defy, which is a mid-range android device. It also happens to be waterproof to about a metre and nearly indestructible :) I'm a tinkerer so I rooted it and put cyanogenmod7 on, overlocked the CPU from 550 to 1000MHz (totally stable), and I have top-end performance in an indestructible body. Great little phone.

I wouldn't reccomend Android to a non-technical person though. You need to faff about with them to get respectable battery life, timely updates, and rid of bloatware.

Get the new Samsung S2, possibly the best phone on the market right now.

I wouldn't say Android's for technically minded people only. I've had Android phones that I've rooted & modded regularly but my current phone's so good it's running completely stock and I haven't even thought about rooting/modding mine yet.

Think you have just confirmed my thinking that if you like to tweak and play then Android is where to go. If you like a decent os without wanting to tweak then Apple is where to go.

Either way as long as you're happy that's all that matters.

......If you like a decent os without wanting to tweak then Apple is where to go.

Why ?, just buy Android and don't tweak it....duh :D
I'd wager a very large slice of cream cake that the majority of buyers of Android devices do not buy them to root, overclock or fanny about with them much more than changing their splash screen picture.

There is talk that the iphone has run its course, the price premium and apple handcuffs are killing its appeal comparatively speaking, unless apple do something radical it appears to have only a cult status existence to look forward to...

Not a chance, those people are probably the same ones saying there was no way the iPad would sell.

Whether you like them or not, Apples marketing and the fact the "want factor they have in many of their products will not let that happen.

There are no real handcuffs unless you like to tweak and as you say the majority of phone users don;t want that.

I love iTunes, I don't get why the fuss about it all, the store is great, best selection of apps on any system and the most used method to legally buy music currently, I can not see the Phone going away any time soon.

I can not see the Phone going away any time soon.

Nobody said it was going away, only that it had peaked, the reasons for which are cost and the handcuffs you say don't exist.
If they don't do something, Android will over run the iphone in every department you say it doesn't already.
Want factor is a wonderful thing but I dunno, its not gonna be enough on its own.

I don't think android will over run iOS in one key area - profit. To Apple, as long as they have critical mass to keep iTunes/app stores going (which is easy once people have bought into the ecosystem) it doesn't matter if there are 5x more android devices out there if they are still making more money selling fewer devices.

The graph on this page shows the profit spilt well. There is newer data which shows the trend continuing, but I prefer the format of this graph.

Because I have never felt handcuffed using my iPhone, I don't care about tweaking or making it do this, that or the other. I want a rock solid OS that anything I put on there App wise will work flawlessly, ease of use. That is what IOS is to me, and I am pretty tech knowledgable. The handcuffs are not a problem for someone who is tech literate so these "handcuffs" are really only there for the very tech minded few.

IOS 5 looks great, the App store is still untouchable, as is iTunes for buying music to the average person.

No way ever will one smart phone be left behind unless the company does not push R&D on a newer faster model, which again Apple will always do.

What are you thinking Apple need to "Do" to not be overtaken? Because they seem to be doing what they need to very well.

I dunno, I thought the end game was World domination:lol:

Maybe as consumers we ought not to trumpet apples achievements with iphone profits, after all it just means they've pulled down their customers pants a fair bit further than anyone else.

I was reading the other day somewhere that app downloads for Android devices somewhere (maybe the US or Japan I forget) have all ready overtaken those of the iphone, no doubt due to a large number of them being free (no profits there then apart from ads), lots are of questionable quality, I dunno whether the quality issue is set to continue but it seems it wouldn't take much to tighten things up.

If success is measured by profit rather than popularity, yawl gonna have to run round with your pants down for a bit longer.:)

Android for me everytime, Ive got a HTC Nexus One and a Motorola Xoom and they both run on Android, runs rings around the Iphoney in my opinion.

As I said in another thread....

iPhone does it Apples way

Android does it your way

Unless it has been modified by the phone manufacturer/phone network, in which case it does it their way. My Sony Ericsson Xperia (on Orange) is less customisable than my iPhone (without invalidating the warranty on either device).
