Phone to pc

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 phone .....somehow all the photos on my pc have gone on to my phone and now I want them to go back on to my pc ......so I've transferred them back over and they now come up on my pc as a file name and not a thumbnail of photo . So now I have to click on every single file to see what photo it is ! Why has this happened ? Does anyone know a remedy ? I have scouted the internet and all I found is what I've done so far !

Change the folder views to "Thumbnails" with the options at the top of the window or in the View menu.

I'm sure I tried that but it made no difference , but will have another go to double check .Thanks
