Just seen this on another forum -

Received a phone call from BT, informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill.. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 or it would be £ 118.00 to re-connect at a later date. The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental! I asked the guy's name - he gave me the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent - & phone number -0800 0800 152. Obviously the fellow realized I didn't believe his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would disconnect my phone to prevent this. AND HE DID !!

My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again. Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card, there & then. I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT. He hung up. I dialed 1471 -number withheld I phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognized. So I phoned the police to let them know. I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently, but it is escalating. Their advice was to let as many people as possible know of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please make as many friends & family aware of this. How is it done? This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800 152 which takes you through to BT Business.

The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying. (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool many. By the way this is not about getting the cash as this would not get past merchant services - it is all about getting the credit card details which include the security number, to be used for larger purchases.

The basic idea of the scam is well known but I had not heard of the scammer holding down the mute button so it appears he has cut off your phone, therefore making the scam more convincing.

Been doing the rounds on Facebook as well

This is old old old, although some elements are true, and is nothing more than scare mongering

People really shouldn't perpetuate these kinds of things by "passing" it on

Scammers have been doing this for years.

It's about time BT sorted out the line remaining live as long as one party hasn't hung up.
If they fixed that, the scam wouldn't work.

They are.
Up to now, the person who initiates the call must be the one to end the connection.
There is an agreement in place signed by ALL the major providers that a hang up from either party will end the connection.
It was a large article on BBC breakfast news prior to christmas.
Can't recall when it will take effect, but it's soon.

Never saw that, but if that's the case then good news and about time.

I missed this but it is a good idea. Found this on the Web - http://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.ph...-call-clearing-procedure-stop-fraudsters.html

I think even dropping the time to 10 seconds is to long. Still to easy for people to put the phone down and pick it back up immediately.

I don't see any reason whatsoever to keep the line live at all. It should disconnect immediately.

That article is 2 years old.
The new proposal is instant disconnection.

It has done for a few months at least, well on my (EE) mobile that is, either mobile to mobile or mobile to LL
About time too, not only for scammers, but I'm sure we've all done it in the past, finished a call and not hit the red button to hang up

Last one I can remember was a call from my brother. I answered, and the only sound I could here was like the Server Hamster rummaging around a box of Cornflakes.
Brothers phone had "pocket dialed" me whilst he was walking on a gravel drive.
I hung up....but a couple minutes later, he was still there.....and again....and again.... :D

Before passing this sort of stuff on, Google Fu 101 says a basic search can help determine if it's news (or genuine)..
Do you realise what you are saying? that could have disastrous consequences if everything posted in OoF had its validity checked first :D

And the rest.. I can find references using the exact same wording and typos from 2012! and the Hoaxslayer article linked above puts it as far back as 2009.

I meant the link to the article about auto disconnecting, in post 9........Not the OP.

Not sure its possible on many exchanges - still running very old system X in many places...LOL

Facts would only spoil some of the discussions, let's not go there

I normally let spam callers wait with music whilst I dial out on be second line. Why don't they call me? :(

I had something similar a couple of years ago. told them I paid by DD attached to my bank card so they could do what they normally dod and take it with that, no we need the credit card details he insisted, fine just cut the phone off don't use it much anyway only to answer scam/spam calls, that stopped the conversation and I hung up.
Nowadays I have a phone that filters calls, if you aren't in the caller list you have to say who you are,,spammers rarely do.

My mobile does cut off immediately the other person hangs up, another EE user so pperhaps they are the only ones atm

I had the Windows scam tried me a couple days ago. They said My computer was infected by virus and of course she had a African accent. I told its not possible and continued the spam, I said again its not possible and she spluttered I get my supervisor and a man came on the phone to continue the scam saying he was from Microsoft control centre. I got a bit fed up and said its not possible that my windows is affected because I have Apple Mac, he hang up.

I detest the way these people with thick African accents think they are brighter than us, however some people are taken in and I can understand why.

Similar call scam tried me just yesterday. I always look up the number on Google or some sites like whycall.me before I pick up an unknown call. I found that people have reported the number as scam, then I answer the phone just to see if this is the same scam as what I read online. After they said that they were from Windows, I just hung up the phone without saying anything. Lol.

I don't answer calls from unknown/private numbers, callers can leave a message if they want to. Don't think I've ever had one from a scammer. My wife has screening software on her UK phone, probably a similar system to the one Gremlin described.
