Please can anyone put me out of my misery!

If I read my emails on my phone, sometimes the original email is deleted from the server, and I can not then read it on my PC when I get back home.

I have tried asking Orange what to do and they passed me on to my website host. They passed me back to my phone provider, saying there were no settings on their control panel that could change this. (I've looked - there aren't)

To be fair to Orange I did eventually get someone helpful who actually sent me an email, which I read on my phone AND then downloaded on to the PC!

But recently I got an important email with a contract attached which I read on the phone but has been deleted.

It seems there are some settings on the phone (in My account) which are just not accessible any more. Its a Samsung Galaxy s2.

:help:

Somewhere amongst the advanced email settings on your phone will be the option to retain emails on the server.

I'm not familiar with Android :spit: so cannot direct you to the exact place.

What email provider are you using?

I use a gmail account with forwarding from other accounts as needed, and utilise it over an iPhone, a Samsung Galaxy running Jelly Bean, an iPad and a laptop and I haven't had that problem. I can't recall ever changing any settings either.

When you say provider, I'm not quite sure what you mean. My email address is jerry@wild-wales.com; in other words emails go via my website. My mobile phone is with Orange.

I have a feeling my version of android is ice cream sandwich (:gag:).

Someone suggested I should delete my current email account from my phone and set up a new, identical one; in which case the advanced settings which I seem to need might be available.

Any thoughts?

I've just tried to set up an account using the default email program in Android, there isn't a setting for keeping/deleting email on the server.

I've emailed myself an email with an attachment and then read it on the phone, it has not deleted either the email or attachment from the email account.

My only thought is that it might then be an issue (or setting) with regard to the software used in forwarding the mails from your website.

That's what is so frustrating. Orange did that and I was able to read the email on the phone AND download it on to my PC. But I have lost several important emails because they SOMETIMES seem to be deleted automatically once read. I have had a look at the Control Panel on my server and there is no setting there that I can change.

:bang::bang::bang:

but I am grateful for your help.

Have you considered getting a gmail address to use on the phone? You can then use the built in gmail client with pop or imap forwarding from your website email?

The gmail setup allows you to choose what you do with mail (both pop and imap) once read or deleted. It will also give you a handy backup of all email as well.

Maybe that is the answer.

I'm not sure how to go about it, though........

Sign up to gmail in the normal way, once done its as simple as going into settings and adding the other email, choosing forwarding options and then setting the other email as the default (so outgoing email still goes via your own wild-Wales.com address).

I receive emails on phone (also a Galaxy) and PC, my setup is to retain emails on the server when receiving on the phone but, delete from server when receiving on the PC.

Once the emails have been received on the PC, they will automatically delete from the phone next time it's updated.

Maybe that's what is happening on your phone.

Pete, that's what I'd like to be able to do but it's not working at the moment. How did you set it up like that? You'd expect it to do that automatically, really.

Dave, I'll look into doing it that way. I'll need someone a bit more tech-savvy than I am , though.....

Both phone and PC are pop3.

On the PC I use Outlook although I would imaging all email clients will be the same, that's set up to delete from server once downloaded.

On the phone, settings are to leave copy on server (email account>settings>incoming settings>delete email from server =never), once the account is set up, you can change this in settings.

Your emails will stay on your phone until accessed via the PC.

I can delete emails from the phone and, they will still download to the PC but, not the other way round, that way I can access emails on the road and know they will still show on my PC when I get home.

(email account>settings>incoming settings>delete email from server =never)

I can get as far as "incoming settings" - then I get a window for my email address and password, and a keyboard.

The email address is correct, I can delete the password and re-enter it and I get an error message - "Internal error - please try again (100)".

It's down to the Orange shop, I think.......

But thanks VERY much for taking the time out to advise. I do appreciate it.

Just thought I would update this.

Decided to go with the "delete account, add new account" route. Not so easy, because if I copied the settings from my PC email account into my new phone email account that didn't work either! :bang:

Fortunately I had a mate round who's used to solving this kind of problem and he fiddled around using different Port numbers until he got one to work!

Gasp.

Here's hoping it works. Thanks for the suggestions, folks.
