Just received the following email, where xxxxxx is my website (me.uk):

(If you are not the person who is in charge of this, please forward to the right person/ department, as this is urgent, thank you!)

Dear CEO,

We are the department of registration service in China. we have something need to confirm with you. We formally received an application on May 4, 2010, One company which self-styled " torrenoz trading co.,ltd" are applying to register "fotofinish" as brand name and domain names as below :
xxxxxx.asia
xxxxxx.com.hk
xxxxxx.com.tw
xxxxxx.hk
xxxxxx.net.cn
xxxxxx.org.cn
xxxxxx.tw

After our initial checking, we found the brand name and these domain names being applied are as same as your company's, so we need to get the confirmation from your company. If the aforesaid company is your business partner or your subsidiary company, please don't reply us, we will approve the application automatically.

If you have no any relationship with this company, please contact us within 10 workdays. If out of the deadline, we will approve the application submitted by " torrenoz trading co.,ltd" unconditionally.

Best regards,

robert.yang@china-fowa.cn

Any thoughts??

Sounds phishy to me.

On the flip side, do you need/want the domain names .asia, .hk etc?

If not then I guess there's no harm in ignoring it. You had yours first with a legitimate reasons, so it's not like someone should come take it off you in future, more importantly as their trading name is "torrenz trading co. ltd"

If it was me, I'd be giving it the same wide berth as the several £9m lottery win emails I've had lately.

I get about 20 of these a week at work. It's just a come on to get you to buy domains you don't need from them. Don't reply.

A little bit of digging and the china-fowa.cn domain in the emal has only been registered since december last year and the owner's admin email is a yahoo address! He also seems to own 227 ther domains, but not sure for what purpose. More digging required....

Yep indeedy - scammier than a scammiers pants.
Tis a fairly intelligent compared to 'I have 1,000,000,000 pounds tell me where you would like it'.

Getting this spam did prompt me to buy the .co.uk version of my website though!

email to me from my hosts said:
.CO is expected to become one of the most popular domain extensions in the world. If you own a trademark, don't miss this opportunity to protect and enhance your online brand before domain names become available to anyone in just a few weeks' time.
:rules:

Thanks for all the responses. They have confirmed my own thoughts, but it is comforting to have others agree.

Another one to watch out for is an invoice from an American firm a few months before your domains are due for renewal, if it doesn't come from your domain registrar it's a scam, I get these on a regular basis:suspect:

Cheers
Ian

Thanks for that Ian.

Usually the Domain Renewal Group, or at least that's who I get them from :suspect:
