Sadly the Australian batsman Phil Hughes has died following his being hit in the head whilst playing cricket. The surgery he had did not work.

As a family we have always been involved in following cricket and playing at local level. Such injuries can occur and thankfully are rare.

Sad morning. There will be all sorts of calls to change the game rules but I hope they are ignored. Would be knee jerk to a rare occurence.

Yep quite sad - freak accidents happen in all sports, however yet another RIP thread.... well it Saves me reading the BBC today.

Very sad indeed.
When I was at secondary school, one of our PE teachers was struck in the head with a cricket ball after a sliced strike by a pupil.
He wasn't wearing a helmet at all and was pronounced dead at the scene. (They reckoned he died instantly before he had even hit the ground).
These things do happen....freak accidents.

A one in nobody knows how many millions chance occurrence. Very sad for all involved.

Very sad indeed, thoughts are with his family and yes, can't imagine what the bowler is going through.

Don't think they'll change the rules but I can see a few helmet design changes on the horizon.

The helmets are evolving all the time.

PH was (apparently) using a 2013 model helmet as oppossed to a "2014" model. My son is an ECB cricket coach so I will ask him when he pops in later this evening. He is generally up on these things.

Incredibly sad news indeed, and absolutely a freak accident. Helmet designs will always evolve and improve but whether using the later version would have saved him is something we will never know, they aren't vastly different, and protecting the upper neck/lower skull area is always going to be difficult without restricting the movement that allows a player to duck a bouncer in the first place. I am sure the manufacturers will work closely with the cricket boards to see what they can do to develop things further. I also hope there are no knee jerk law changes, it really was an absolute freak. Huge sympathies for his friends and family, and also for the bowler Sean Abbot who inspite of the huge support he is getting must be utterly devastated.

If laws get changed it will mean fielders in close proximity to the batsman will need to wear helmets - many do already but I have seen some nasty injuries to fielders too
