Hello all,

My folks have had the same 1988 Ford Granada for 18 years and now it is time for a change. A friend has found a 2002 Peugeot 306 estate 1.6 petrol auto, two owners, VGC, FSH, 37,000 miles for £2,000 ono.

I know nothing about Peugeots so could anyone please tell me if this is a good car for a good price? What sort of MPG could they get?

Have a look around for a diesel one but not the HDi version the normal 1.9TD is the best IMO 50-55mpg and lots of pulling power
The petrol engines get a bit rattly after 80k or so but the diesels will keep going for ever as long as they are serviced well my last one i had is still going well and i sold it 2 years ago with 247000 mile on the clock

That's an awful lot of money for a 306, you can buy 307s for less. At auction £2k will buy you a 2005 307 diesel estate, it'll certainly have more miles (maybe 80k), but as Cathal says, Peugeot diesel engines will go on forever if looked after :)

It's difficult to say without seeing the car - it all depends on the condition of the car and where it's coming from. The 1.6, as Cathal noted, isn't a great engine and I don't think the automatic box would make it a great seller either. Off the top of my head somewhere between £1100-1600 would sound a fairer price.

My parents are retired, and travel at a max of 50mph, so as long as it goes and returns good MPG, they'll be happy. Speed and power is very unimportant to them.
 
Avoid Peugeot petrol engines like the plague ! Even/especially if power and speed is not an issue..... They dont last very long (due to being underpowered) and wear out fairly quickly.

Look for a Dturbo as suggested above. Hdi's are good too, but I have a soft spot for the older Dturbo engines. Either will do for your parents.

A lot of 306's are looking quite shabby these days so make sure you DO get a good one. avoid 206's and 307's as reliability can be an issue !

Pay about £1500 for the car you mentioned in your o/p.

Dealers will do anything to sell a car in this climate !!

I doubt it'll be great on fuel being automatic, I'd imagine if you see 30mpg out of one you'd be doing well
 
It may sound silly, but assuming they want a simple car with a bit of room and good economy, they should look at the citroen berlingo hdi.

No DPF/FAP/DMF to go wrong. 50mpg fairly easy. High position so easy to get in and out of if you dont have great flexibility. Loads of space.
