Petrol / fuel should fall to £1 a litre before Xmas

Does this spreadsheet allow for the full extra costs of travelling further for cheaper fuel? 45p per mile is the cost the inland revenue place on an average car, so you would need to have a big reduction in pump cost to justify extra travel. Also what do you cost out your time at? An average hourly wage is about £13.50 so about 23p per extra minute at a guess.
 
Switching from selling fuel in gallons to litres was the biggest con trick ever pulled on the public. Saying £1 a litre makes it sound cheap, £4.50 a gallon, a bit less so. Especially when car manufacturers still use MPG to work out fuel economy.

We won't ever get down to a quid a litre round my way. A couple of weeks ago, when I heard the news saying fuel had dropped to £1.08 a litre as a national average, it went UP to £1.11 at my local pump.

I can fill up at Morrisons or Shell, usually the same price but where as a Morrisons tank regularly gets me 470 miles until the petrol light, a Shell tank can vary between 480 & 529 miles the most I've ever squeezed out before the petrol light coming on. Hear Shell fuel is of a better quality but 59 miles, maybe it just fills the tank above where Morrisons do?

Mrs Nod got a 7p/litre voucher from the supermarket a few days ago but her car needs filling up tomorrow so I can't pinch the voucher!

It's all parameterized. My personal value of time ranges from an awful lot down to zero or even negative. (For example, going home to the cold, dark building site which is currently my home - I'm really it in a hurry to get there any faster!)

I had a voucher with so much off per Litre, and I thought great fill up the car. But it was up to a maximum of £10 worth of fuel ...
 
No such limit on the voucher she's got. Had to spend £30 on cleaning products though - good job her business needed all sorts of stuff ;). Her car holds about £70 worth of fuel from empty so it's a worthwhile saving, especially since the stuff she bought to get the voucher was all on special offer as well.

I shall pinch her bum and blame you, Keith!
 
Asda and Morrisons are dropping their prices of petrol today. They say it is dropping to under £1 a Litre. I wonder if that means 99.9 pence per Litre ?
 
a litre of diesel is Euros 1.05 cents in France now at supermarket prices - that's about 78 pence
 
There is talk the price will only stay low for a few days, then back up pretty soon after. Obviously just a marketing ploy, to get their names out in the news just before Xmas....

Snake oil isn't necessary, just a good quality fuel over one that is just adequate. A cleaner burning petrol will allow a more advanced spark, and less fuel having to be burnt to produce the same power. A fuel that doesn't burn so well may create knock and the spark will be taken out to counteract it, meaning more fuel being used to produce the same level of power.

Asda did that here a fortnight ago for 4 days. :-)

Clever marketing, as people are talking about it. Wonder if it less costly dropping pennies all over the country on a litre of fuel, as opposed to doing TV ads? Big shop names are in the news every day about them dropping fuel prices, a great many times a day, so it might be less costly to drop fuel by pennies, and get free daily publicity..

Well it might do, except that I tend to buy fuel from my local independent guy
1) he's quite close
2) there is virtually nothing to chose between him price wise and TesMorriAs.

Did not know there were any independents left, thought they all belonged to some sort of group or chain / franchise etc ?

I occassionally use an esso station in Borough Green that often matches supermarket prices. Turns out, as a franchisee he can charge whatever he likes so long as Esso get their cut.

Story not long ago, that the franchisees made very little profit if any, while their big fuel suppliers did. Seems some relied solely on sales from the shop side of things only..

I guess its possible this guy also has a "mini mart"
But of course having said that, so do most of the big boy's too these days.

They have to sell a bit of everything to make a wage, shame really. Its only really the people higher up the chain, that make the real money ..

We only do economical cars, like to get at least 50 plus to the gallon. I remember the days we were happy with 30MPG, I think 30 was the norm ..

Used to have a motorbike, I was lucky to get 20 to the gallon. Had to get shut of it after a little while, just too costly to run. Ahh they were the fun days :)
 
Mrs Nod dreams of 25/gallon!!! On a long motorway run, I get 42/gallon with all the comfort toys on. s***box is around 30 average but 90%+ of its miles are barely warmed up and into or back from town - and it's an evil hill to get up on the way home!
