I have to say that you should try to look on the bright side and understand that in the UK you are pretty much safe really. I understand that it may not feel like that some times and I know it does happen from time to time, but the chances of getting attacked are pretty slim in real life.
I believe the person above to be misinformed about the defence sprays, there are products available (Dyejet, StoppaRed and Xmarker) that will both spray an attacker with a permanant dye and give you a chance to get away. I am thinking of investing myself! I would just advise you all to avoid anyone running around with a bright red or blue face! They probably havent been up to much good!

Does anyone actually know of any photographers attacked and robbed of their equipment? I have to admit to never giving it a second thought, and I'm not about to start worrying about it now.

Is there any sprays which we can legally use?
I was thinking pepper would be a quick spray to resolve a situation
Nearly right. Things like pepper spray, CS gas/spray and stun guns are actually classed as Section 1 Firearms, and or prohibited weapons. Serious stuff:nono::nono:

put on weight, grow a beard, and look just slightly scary.

of course, if you accidentaly spray someone in the face with a can of deodorant that happens to be in your trouser pocket.......

The only things that are classed as firearms are articles which discharge a projectile. CS spray and a few other things are prohibited weapons.Nearly right. The Firearms Act has lots of sections some of which deal with firearms and some with prohibited weapons. If it doesn't discharge a projectile its not a firearm. CS spray isn't a firearm of any type its a prohibited weapon.Sorry brash but you are nearly right aswellthey are actually section 5 which is more serious than section 1. Section 5 means that they are in the same classification as machine guns and handguns and not the same as sporting rifles. A far more serious crime.
Good advice Holden, only thing I'd add is on safe havens, if it has to be a pub, make sure it's a nice friendly family pub...you don't want to be jumping out of the frying pan into an inferno no, do you?![]()
ANYTHING carried with the intention of using it for self defence is an offensive weapon. The starting point for sentencing for possession of an offensive weapon is custody - even if it isn't used or brandished. Not much room for a not guilty plea in those circumstances. As the title mentions personal safety then I consider my kit secondary to my own life. I carry a knife when I am out togging or running. It is against everything which I stand but I will take my chances being judged by 12 rather than being carried by six.
The confusion comes because a lot of so called defence sprays are actually marker sprays.I believe the person above to be misinformed about the defence sprays, there are products available (Dyejet, StoppaRed and Xmarker) that will both spray an attacker with a permanant dye and give you a chance to get away.
t when you are put under pressure logical thought is difficult.
