The amusing thing is they changed the image from a different one because people where saying it was was startrail.

Looking at the 2nd image again on the sky page I'd be inclined to say satellite not meteor as there doesn't appear to be the fade in/out you'd expect (see the last image on the Independent article, the 1st shows it badly but the middle doesn't appear to, could be a sat could be badly compressed)
