Just a general question from someone who usually only takes images of "fur and feather! When taking "candid" images, particularly of people, do you ask permission first or do you just shoot? Seeing some images on here, my feeling is to diversify, but I don't want to get into any trouble!

Thanks for any advice.

You can't shoot 'candid' images if you ask first! Just shoot! There are ways to make it less obvious you are shooting someone if they spot you.

Just shoot, if you ask permission first you just end up with a bunch of snaps of people posing for the camera.

Don't try and hide it either.....you're not doing anything wrong.

Candid mean just that Candid- if you ask, then it becomes a Portrait

I just shoot and if asked to delete the image by the person Ive shot - I do simples ;)

I've been asked to delete a few times - luckily my camera has a back up SD slot so they all get kept :)

Cheers all. I think my use of "candid" was of course not appropriate in this context! Normally I take fur & feather and they offer no objections or run/fly off! I just feel awkward with a camera in public places looking at people. Perhaps with time, my inhibitions may be lost. I've been very impressed looking at some of the efforts on here.

You will feel more relaxed if you go with another togger. I recently took some shots of a guy in London who was obviously suffering some mental health issues. I had no problems getting the shots but someone on flickr commented that it was a bit insensitive to post them on there. I ignored and deleted that comment but left the images up. I did question myself a bit though and felt a bit guilty following the comment but Street photography reflects life on the streets and mental health issues are on our streets.

Cheers Scott. I will be spending a few days in Bath in a couple of weeks and hope to have a go then.

Bath sounds like a good place to start, a very touristy place where everyone has a camera of some sort.

I too struggle taking photos of people in the street but my favourite palce to go is the British Museum in London, massive numbers of people with cameras, no one bats a eyelid.

Another good tip is to shoot and move on, means you often have to pre visualise the shot, and make the settings you need before raising the camera to your eye, but it's much less conspicuious.

Here are a few examples, hope you don't mind.

Loads of opportunities around Bath Abbey, tourists, musicians, street artists etc etc and nobody will bat an eyelid :)
