Perfect Ebay/Paypal Scam

Interesting and yet another reason why I've not used Ebay and PayPal for several years now.

I don't get it - I've opened a "not as described" case before and no refunds took place until I sent the item back, and proved it to PP/Ebay with proof of delivery? The link here seems to imply that the item was not returned to him?

I think in this case, the box was empty so nothing to return.

Likewise, I've had to send the item back at my expense before getting any refund.

Did any of you pay for those items with your credit card?

And

Make a charge back through your credit card as opposed to claiming through eBay/Paypal?

we had one at work the person said he never recived this item this was after 13 months
it took us 4 days and god know how many man hours tracking this item down

anywaywe found the paper work and tracked it via the courrier website which stated the person and his signature were on the paper work not long after ebay put it to him as far as i am aware it is now closed after we thratend to go to the police fraud department and sent him the email too saying we have proof of date time etc etc

and guess which part of the country ............. london again always london or non uk always o dam annoying

Always pay with cc but no, I went through ebay, that may be the difference.

This scam has been around for years,in general only accept paypal if you do not mind losing the item.
I have sold phones on e-bay but have only ever accepted cash on collection in person.
Same as selling items on this site,i have only sold a d7k but insisted the buyer collect and pay cash that way everyone is happy.

Agree. Not exactly new news.

You sell on ebay, you take your chances, and especially with higher value items.

It should surely sound alarm bells with ebay/PayPal though if the buyer tries a charge back for not as described goods without ever contacting the seller first.

You have to remember the golden rule 99.9% of people are honest

I've bought and sold on eBay almost since it started, the only buying problem I've had is with a GameCube game not received, I've sold £2000 lenses, shippedabroad using standard airmail without a problem

The only place I won't sell to is Italy as their postal service is a guy with a huge pile of parcels and a Stanley knife, anything he likes he keeps

People fall for scams because they're greedy, see a £3000 item for £400, you'll never see the item or your money again

 I still don't get it then - either the seller sent an empty box, and got re-scammed in the process, or the buyer returned an empty box, in which case the recorded weights will have been different - something that Ebay and PP do pick up on....

Other worthless items get used to make up the weight normally, like bottles of water or a bag of pennies.

Yes, I know how it's done - but the actual post simply states that he wasn't sent the item back - nothing about getting sent something completely different...

Strange, whenever I've opened a dispute PayPal has demanded that I send the item back, even if the return address was the Far East.

I also find the story to have too many inconsistencies to reflect reality. I've had a few "not as described" disputes (as the buyer) and its always been the case that I have had to return the item (by trackable means) for refund.

A friend of mine had the empty box sent back trick tried, they sent the box back minus the phone but all the accessories and a piece of wood included. eBay found in his favour as the weight posted out did not match the weight posted back.

There must be more to the story in the OP then he is letting on.

i think the fact the buyer did a charge back on his CC means that ebay / paypal would not have been dealing with the buyer directly any correspondence would have been with the CC company , ebay / paypal and the seller
this makes me think that any chance of the item being sent back would not have come into question
