People like this **** me off

^^ We had something similar when we opened the studio in Leeds... The previous occupier had used an image from Corbis, and their solicitors sent a letter demanding £1800 or so, for unauthourised use. It was a 200px photo of a pen on a piece of paper.

They also demanded they stop using the image with immediate effect, or the charges would go up.

Luckily, it was nothing to do with us and a quick phone call to said solicitors put them straight :)

That's just excessive. I got my photo taken by a council photographer with my MP, and he sent it to me in an email. Why can't all photographers be that cool and let people use images of THEMSELF? If I found out someone was selling an image of me standing on a beach, looking towards the ocean, without my permission, and was making ££ from it, then I'd totally sue.

Thinking like a photographer now. :bonk:

Depends on how you approach the person. Ask nicely and you'd probably get.
However, unless sold (or given away) copyright of the photo remains with the photographer, not the subject.

Copy an article?

No......sorry, my laptop was on a major go slow and only showed the first 4/5 answers to your post.........then as I posted my answer the ammount of posts shot up, it posted my answer and then shut down, lol.......bloody laptops :(

What I was saying was that I would have issued a small claims just to get the point across to the company :)

We're not a busy. We're an opinion website, more free than the Independent. I'm not in this for the money, if I wanted that I would have tried to set up some online business.

Does the Domino's Pizza advert money go to you or is that part of a free hosting package?

Fair play trying to have a go at 16. It's nice to see someone young with some ambitions, but interesting choice considering you're not entitled to vote for another couple of years.

Because he was doing you a favour and gave you a copy, probably just thinking you'd use it on your facebook etc.

Nope - if you were thinking like a photographer you'd be thinking can I reproduce it, or something similar. What ISO, shutter speed, exposure was used etc :D

I think anyone on TP with any knocked off software shouldn't be commenting :D
I reckon every TP member whose commented on this thread has probably ignored this post. I agree that 'Fresh Politics' shouldn't be stealing images but stealing software is just as bad. I have software that was sourced from non-legitimate sources so I'm not going to comment on a young lad who obviously has good intentions even if he is a little misguided. There is a lot worse done by the youth of today.

I'll have to stand up for myself here! Being a software developer as well as a photographer I know the copyright infringments of both. I don't have any pirated software. I believe the last thing I was guilty of was using a copy of Microsoft Office that I shouldn't have. I have since replaced that with open office which is free. So as far as software is concerned I'm now clean as a whistle .

I have a legitimate Windows OS, Office and bought my copies of Lightroom and photoshop (when my wife was a full time student ;) ) These days it's actually quite difficult to not have valid copies of main stream software with the online authorisation processes.
Even so, I'm not sure I'd be admitting to dodgy software.

Some interesting reading from the intellectual property office about copyright.
http://www.ipo.gov.uk/types/copy.htm

That was fabulous...missed all that last night due to watching the Three Stooges on TV...
I love the way his grasp of copyright is so fluid - if he's in the photo it's his, not the photographer's; if he can 'right-click' it, it's his to use, not the photographer's; in fact if he just feels like using it, then it's his...wow...
So simple, yet so effective...

"What's yours is is mine and what's mine is also mine"...last time I heard that argument it was coming from my ex-Wife...

Hmm, I'd say if it's a friend photo with perhaps someone famous, or just a group of freinds photo, then it should be all of theirs. Shared property. However if it's a bunch of footy fans surrounding Rooney, then it would be the photographers photo.

Hmm and what if it's not a photo but a painting? Your logic is not logical (pardon the pun).

Using painting as example, the painters painted portraits of other people but it was their property not the others painted on it. Why would photograph be any different?

Or if we go down that line of arguments, the musician wrote a song about you explicitly mentioning your name, would that mean that it belongs to you automatically?

Quote myself, Hopefully Andy will play catch up when he's back from school/college. Been reading a bit more about you Andy and fair play, you've got quite a lot to say. Reminds me a little of a young William Hague.

His other website:http://www.blightyandy.co.uk/

Would you like me to chuck you down a shovel?
lol! Now that made me laugh! :)

Out of interest, I'd be intrigued to know FP's views on the recent Clause 43 amendment to the digital rights bill. Being so obviously 'clued up', I'm sure he's got some interesting views on the subject...

BTW - I think we should applaud FP for his obvious interest in politics! When I was his age, all that interested me was chasing girls and my Commodore 64... ;):D

If this thread was archived and FP read it again even a year later, he will probably look back on it with complete disgust and disaproval for his comments.

I remember when I was 15, no one was right except me. Can't believe how wrong I was, turns out mostly everyone else was right :P

I'm not a pro photographer so don't feel as heated about image theft as somebody who earns a living from it but I can't help feeling a certain amount of respect for young Andy.

According to the popular press, all teenagers are either pushing over old ladies for their pensions or shagging in alleys while drinking alco-pops. This lad takes an interest in politics, writes relatively eloquently and has a couple of sites that he maintains while he is still at school.

When challenged he comes flying out like a teenager in a bar brawl, head down, arms flailing, swinging punches against anybody who challenges him, even if they are stronger, greater in number and in the right!

I reckon he's a bright young man, he'll take some of the good advice that has been given here (particularly by Edinburgh Gary who has learnt the hard way) and make his site legal and probably be more careful in the future.

Gary mentioned micro stock sites where small images cost pennies, it is also worth mentioning that many photographers would give up images for free to a non commercial website, particularly one run by an enthusiastic teenager. The same photographer would have no qualms about suing if the image was used illegally.

:)

I hope so Pete - the impression I got was that he didn't seem to care that the images weren't his to use and would continue the practice...
If just once he'd have said something along the lines of: "OK I see that I've made a mistake and will sort it - someone point me in the right direction",
But all I read was "I'll do what I like because I'm just starting out"...

That attitude just awoke the Victorian-Dad in me and I wanted to give him a thick-ear and send him to bed early with no TV...

Thanks for the advice guys (and girls). Can you please suggest a good place to buy news photo's? Preferably the latest ones, and images of politics (politicians etc.) Looking to pay no more than £2 a photo.

As for the Domino's Pizza advert, I have taken it offline as part of the new theme. It had only been online for a day, and as such I didn't make any money.

Same here! and that's how it should be, tbh.

16? Whats wrong with you lad? Theres plenty of time to be all grown up and serious, get out there, boff some girls and do some hard drugs! :D

The trouble with news photo's is generally they cost a little more. If you're after politicians, how about starting by approaching the conservatives as your a member of the party. They'd probably have some official shots you could use, probably with the proviso you only say good things :D

You could always link to a story, then blog/comment on it?

Are you telling fellow photographer, Scott, that? He after all also runs NND Scotland. I can balance 'life' with politics.

I would imagine all of the parties will have free images available to bona fide websites, wouldn't do you any harm to drop them an email and ask.

Who knows, you might even get better stuff by going direct than nicking stuff off the web ;)

Probably. Since I started my Racing Exposure blog (club motorsport news) I've got on the mailing list of quite a number of organisations who send out press releases which often come with images that I can use.

Hmmm it will be interesting what you two will think of each other when your all grown up and in the world of journalism ;) If you and Scott put this much effort into a joint project as you did this thread then you could both be onto a winner.

I made a intricate wood carving of a pigeon once, it took me chuffin ages to make. I cut myself many times during the process.

Then one day, I was approached by a pigeon who said "That carving you have there - is of me, I want it".

"Sure you can have it" I replied "But you have to buy it from me".

"No" said the pigeon, "It's a carving of me, I do not have to pay for anything that is me, give it Now!"

So I took out my carving knife and stabbed the pigeon in the head nine times.

Shurely "explained the ins and outs of copyright law and agreed a fair price" ?

:naughty:

Not to a talking rat with wings mate = bypass explanation and proceed straight to violent death via stabbing.

Go straight for the eyes. Nicely. ;)
