I just took the dog out for a walk, it must be -5 here, the roads and pavements are covered in black ice.

As i'm walking along the road which is 30mph in good weather some ******* comes past me doing at least 40, as he rounds the curve he hits the black ice and the back of the car starts to slide so he brakes and ends up going sideways down the road.

Luckily he didn't hit anyone, then 2 minutes later I hear a bus, I turn round and he's doing 40, what the hell is wrong with these people:cuckoo:
 
Black ice here today too, in car parks and on the street. I've never felt a wind so cold before.
 
idiocy is what is wrong with them, people are the same here the roads are icy and they still drive like stink, and usually we have cars lining both sides of the road, some seem to relish the ice, i saw a boy racer tearing round the roundabout by my house sideways because of his speed and ice i think you are correct there will be a major accident at some point because of peoples stupidity

Maybe it's the Darwin theory at it's finest? Lets just hope these spanners don't take out innocent people.

I can't see the problem with all this 'OMG WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE IF WE GO OUTSIDE' warnings.......slow and steady and you can drive on most roads in this weather.

Quite right.

I believe a section of the M62 was closed today because of a bit of sleet....

We've had weather forecasts, yet I havn't seen a single gritter out yet....

If I had the money, I'd be outta this country tomorrow !!!!

OK when I younger we had lots more snow than we do now,and you learnt to drive in snow because it was around for days on end if not weeks year after year, and people got experience. The kids of today just have no idea about bad weather driving.


And while I'm here I did not miss one single day of school because of snow. When the buses are running the school is open.

I'm a firm believer we should adopt the US system of snow days. For every day a school is close in winter because of snow they lose a days summer holiday to make up the time. Lets see how often the teacher over here close a school then.
 
I hope it snows at least 2 ft tonight. I've always wanted to go to work on a sledge.
 
You wanna try being in London when a bit [yes, maybe as much as 2cm] of the white stuff falls, the entire city goes into panic mode. Its amazing, like Whiteflyer, I remember you got plenty of chance to learn to drive on snow when i was younger, yet seems to have completely passed this placed by. Show them a terrorist bomb and the whole city mobilises, there is a cameradie and co-operation that is incredible, yet snow... the sheer idiocy is astounding. I just looked out the door whilst letting the dogs out in the garden, its icy cold with frost, but cloud has come over, god forbid it doesnt fall as snow, or all hell will break loose :bang:

Well, looks like they were wrong about Manchester...Not a peep of snow...just rain.
 
Snow these days , I've had heavier dandruff :D

A few decades ago I lived in a little village called Murthly, 10 miles north of Perth. From what I remember the village was cut off for at least a week over Easter one year. My dad built me an igloo in the back garden :thumbs:
 
as some of you know, i spend quite a bit of time in Latvia where it likes to snow properly.
its against the law not to put on winter tyres between november and march everyone there drives in the snow just as fast as on tarmac. scared the crap out of me the first time i was there when we hit a bend at 70mph i thought we were going to understeer into the ditch!
 
I had a bit of a moment on one of the islands in our village last night. I know this area (being at the bottom of a hill) gets very little sunlight during the day so as I approached I was doing probably no more than 5mph. However that exact same hill means that when it's a little slippery you also have to "give it the beans" a little as you come off the island. Even more so in a RWD car.

So, prepared as I was, coming into the junction I knew I'd end up with a bit of opposite lock. Wrong! it was seriously like an ice rink and I was pretty much sideways as I came off the island (all very much under control might I add), straightened up and parked up on my driveway a couple of hundred metres further along.

I decided to have a walk back down because I just KNEW some "ell bend" would do some damage and sure enough, as I walked back someone came onto the island still doing 30, ended up completely under steering off the road and into someones driveway!

Luckily there was nothing parked in it.

People these days:

a) Don't have the driver skills to cope with such situations.

b) REALLY don't think about what might happen.

Bring on compulsory skid pan testing I say!



P.S. It's not the first time I've driven to work with a few slabs in the boot of my car to gain some traction.

I only want 2ft of snow, like in the first pic. A snow drift would be cool too though, because then I could jump from my window.
 
Well, I opened one eye about 4.30 this morning and snow was DUMPING, roof opposite was laden, my calls were in Penrith today, so from me that either means M6 North from J36 or up the A6 and the Mighty Shap - stayed at home.

I stayed at home because there was not point in risking the damage, I phoned my first appointment and she was expecting my call, not a hope she said.

I love driving in slippy conditions though :) although I maybe had a bit too much weight in the boot of the estate when I applied the handbrake yesterday on a snowy / icey road :)
 
I watched a snow plough slide down the hill yesterday morning.
 
Well, the council cannot so much as collect the rubbish in Brighton so I am not expecting to see gritters until June.....
