Hi all, was wondering if anyone can offer me any advice.. I'm getting a bit impatient with my current 18-55mm lens and am keen to give a zoom lens a go. As I am fairly new to SLRs can anyone tell me what sort of size lens would be best for me to start on? Thanks. :)

That does rather depend on what you like to do with the camera. Do you want one lens that will offer the best range as a keep on the camera at all times thing. Do you want to shoot lots of portraits, some sports stuff?

Let us have some more info and I'm sure people will come up with some good ideas for you to check out. :)

I would prefer one that will cover a wide variety of needs and can be left on pretty permanently, I like mostly landscapes but I do like taking close ups of my cat! Just a fairly generic lens (if they make one).. Thanks.

I'm only after something easy to use and something to learn on, not keen to get a 2nd mortgage for my first lens if poss. Also does it have to be a pentax lens? :)

I think the Tamron would be ok for that and even though it's not the cheapest it's not too expensive.
'Tamron' != 'Pentax'

Thanks for that, have had a look but it's a little more than I wanted to pay for a first 'playabout' lens. Will either have to get 2nd job or find slightly more affordable alternative. I would imagine being quite happy to pay that sort of money (and more) if I knew I was good at photography but I am looking for something to practice on for a while. Am I being too optimistic or are they all that sort of price? :(

Out of interest, can I ask what you dont like about the 18-55?

Oh I like it, it's just I tried taking some pics of the birds yesterday in the garden and I can't really see them without a magnifying glass! Couldn't get any closer cos the flippin things fly off!!! Love taking photos of wildlife but keep hitting the same problem, as soon as I get close enough for a decent shot, they run/fly away... :(

Hi I have a Pentax K100D (recently bought).

Like yourself wanted to experience(play) with other lenses other than the kit lens 18-55.

Managed to pick up a Tamron 70-210mm from e-bay.

This is not a digital lens but from a 35mm SLR and although heavier than a digital lens, it gives me choice, Pentax DSLR can "step down" to use all previous lenses to fit Pentax cameras, this is why I chose the Pentax. As a beginner I did not want to spend a lot until I knew what I was dealing in.

Anyway I bought the lens for £15 including postage, I have seen many more available usually attached to an old Pentax camera, just make sure it is K, KA fit etc.

see the following link for an example of whats out there.

http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=pentax++KA+lens

Hope this helps.

Thats a fab idea, what kind of result do you get and are you pleased?? Would be interested to know. Have only had my K100d for about 4 weeks and am still at the 'have a go' and see what it turns out like! Am about to become a full time student again for a year and can't really afford the vast amount that serious kit involves!

Millsy17,

More than happy with my lens, it had previously been well looked after (e-mailed the seller for history, it had belonged to her father). Sorry I said it was a Tamron in previous post it is actually a Tokina 70-210mm.

Great results so far, and cant believe if I had bought a new lens would have cost me £200+.

Recommend you look at these lenses on e-bay to pick up a bargain, dont be afraid to look at Pentax SLR camera sales as they often contain lenses as part of the bundle.

Good luck!

Thanks for your advice :clap: Good luck to you too.

Just had to tell someone who's interested - am V excited because following much debate my first ever zoom lens arrived today!! 2 days too late for the Liverpool fireworks but am off out to practice (if I stay in the neighbours will think I'm spying).. Ended up buying a Pentax 50-200mm which should be enough to keep me cheery for a while!

:)

A bit late but...

I have the Samsung GX-10 (Pentax K10D) & not been 100% happy with the 18-55 kit lens (same as Pentax) I've replaced it with the Sigma 17-70 which is a great lens, good focal range too at 25.5mm - 105mm (35mm equivalent) - it also has excellent macro abilities
