Very old SLR, which was (very) kindly donated to me by a forum member, only its not been used in a while, and I cant unscrew the battery housing. Any ideas as to how to release it?

A tiny squirt of WD40 ?
I remember often having problems with this sort of thing and used to apply a thin film of grease before refitting, so some WD40 will help you free it off - practise first though, as it sprays out very quickly..!

Spray a little on a dish and 'paint' it on. Try putting the camera in the freezer for a while first though, making the metal cooler will shrink it a little.

It's just not happening, and my dad's over zealous attempts with a 2p have damaged the slot in the cover, will Jessops be able to do something for me?

Also: a friend suggested I shock it free with a hammer, like one would for nuts on a car engine. Was I right to tell him I'd try it only if he hit his eye socket with the same hammer first?

You were right :)

Leave the camera in the freezer overnight, give the metal time to contract.

In freezer now, if that doesn't work I found someone who can repair it, but if it's going to cost more than £25, I'll try and get another K-mount compatible body on ebay, keep the other body till I can afford the repairs.

Well, I took it apart and repaired it myself... jobs a good 'un (well assuming i remember to remove the base plate every time I need to change batteries.
