The manual for the Pentax Auto 110 states slowest shutter speed to be 1 second at F/2.8.

This holds true when I have the camera loaded with an ORCA 110 film cartridge, however when the camera is empty, the shutter will remain open for much longer than one second thus giving the impression that long (ish) exposures are possible. ( 5 seconds, perhaps longer), although it seems 5 seconds is the maximum that the shutter will stay open.

What i don't understand is why the metering / shutter is not allowing lengthy exposure times when film is loaded in the body.....kinda strange:thinking:

Does it meter from the film. OM's give a funny result without film loaded as they're trying to meter from the film and instead get the very black pressure plate.

One way or another its programed exposure so it just isn't going to do anything outside of the quoted apertures / speeds.

I dont think it meters off the film but not having a film cartridge in place definetly extends the length of time that the shutter remains open. Just a shame it wont function in a similar manner when loaded with film.

It's a bit of fun to use nonetheless.....sometimes just being able to point and shoot without giving much thought to the shot can be a refreshing change and surprisingly some results come out pretty good......a hit and miss affair at best but it's a laugh :p

There is quite an interesting description of how the internals work here if you have not read it already.

I'll confess a dark and dirty secret..... I picked one up on Friday for £18 with the 18, 24 and 70mm lenses a few filters and a flash my excuse is it will make for a silly photograph next to the monster 67 II although I may try a film some when and see what you can do with a drum scanned 110

That's cool :cool::D

Like other subminiatures, the flash and motorised grip for the Pentax are nearly as big as thé camera itself!

Have fun..... I'll be interested to see what a drum scan will offer as scanning 110 film for me is a right pita as is 127 film.

Neither format likes to lie flat and holders are non existent so the negs are held under a sheet of glass. Note idéal but tbh i don't shoot them for quality résults......t'is why i have MF and LF kit ;)

Does it get the film speed off the film canister, like APS? The film speed will dictate exposure settings.

Yes the original 110 cartridges had a ridge which pushed up against a tiny lever inside thé body to indicate to the camera metering system what asa film was installed.

I will take a look at thé orca cartidge and compare with an old Kodak one to sée if the ridges correspond.

That may have some bearing on the long shutter speed .....perhaps when the lever isnt depressed by the cartridge, the meter registers a much lower asa like 12

Since there was no official specification of what the film speeds should actually be—they were just "low" and "high"—film and camera manufacturers had to decide for themselves the meaning. Pentax chose 80 and 320 ISO as their settings,[Quote/]

I have no idea why the shutter might appear to open for longer when the camera is open but trying to do anything with iso settings will not get it to open longer as it is "programmed" exposure you would need to hack its firmware to get a shutter speed longer than 1 second.

edit forum software doing that thing with goats again I see
