Thinking of going to Pembrokeshire this summer. Any suggestions as to places to stay that would serve as a good base? Looking at a place called Lydstep at the moment which is not all that far from Saundersfoot by the looks of it.

Anyone here know this area?

Yeah, I know Pembs pretty well. The section between St Davids and Cardigan is the wildest and least peopled. Great beaches as well as cliffs.

St David's Head / Whitesands / Carn Llidi is a big favourite area of mine.

The area around Tenby, which includes Lydstep, is more popular but there are two great beaches very close to Lydstep, and some good stretches of cliff coastline between there and Pembroke and beyond.

Marloes beach in the far west is spectacular.

There's plenty of choice really.

While you're in Pembs you can buy some of my postcards ....;)

Thanks, Jerry... will be travelling with young family so good beaches are a bonus. We're looking at the Celtic Haven resort - do you happen to know it?

Hi there live in west wales and it all depends what you want from the area. The south is mainly for famalies with a number of attractions like okawood, blue stone, with good beaches in Tenby and saunderfoot. Further up west you have Solva and St David, Fishguard etc with very good views, Then you come into GOD'S COUNTRY CEREDIGION, where u got cardigan and the River Teifi esturay and great cliffs and beaches. If you want more info give me a shout

I suspect it may be a caravan site? If I'm correct it has a beach but is otherwise not terribly exciting. Two much better and more isolated beaches are not far away, near Skrinkle Haven YHA about 2 miles away (I think), accessible by car then steps; and south of Manorbier (car, walk then steps)

Have you been looking at Saundersfoot as well? it may be very family friendly but it has never attracted me at all. Seems full of Pound shops.

Tenby is a fabulous old walled town with some pedestrianised streets. Very photogenic in its own right, especially the harbour. It looks great from north and south along the coast as well. But it also has Pound shops and can get very busy in summer .

Try to avoid August and Bank Holidays anywhere around here!

I grew up in saundersfoot and the whole area is fantastic and to defend my little village there are 2 pound shops which is far less than tenby has

if you are looking at the caravan site in lydstep it's owned by the same people that own Kiln park in tenby which only about 10-15 minute walk into the town centre great for the evenings whereas the lydstep site is on it's own really a self contained site with a pub in the village but that would be a fair old walk

Hi folks... all change. I read reviews on Celtic Haven on Tripadvisor and they kind of put me off. We like to have a little bit of a pamper when it comes to holidays and I couldn't really find something to fit the bill in Pembrokeshire other than one which looked to be too far inland for my liking.

In the end, we have opted for a nice spot in Cornwall, but I still hope to do Pembrokeshire another time. Maybe next year if I can find somewhere suitable.

Shame. We'll miss you....;)

I would suggest you look more toward central Pembrokeshire, to the north east of Haverfordwest.

Then you are equidistant from South Pembs and the Tenby area, The Haven, Dale and the beautiful River Cleddau. You have the county town of Haverfordwest and Narberth, Oakwood and Bluestone nearby. Furthermore you are within striking distance of North Pembrokeshire - Cardigan and the Preseli Hills (where the Blue Stones at Stonehenge came from). West there is Newgale, Solva and St Davids, and the ark of the rugged north coast taking in Fishguard through to Cardigan.

Too much to photograph on one visit I'm sure and if you take my advice you may finish up staying within a stones throw of my little plot! ;)

Argh! I've just read the awful news!!!!!!! Best of luck on the M5

Pembrokeshire is full of niche hotels and Tidy B&B's - I'm surprised.

Was it more of a family holiday you were after?

Have a look at my website, in the Links section there's a link to a great hotel in Tenby. It's not on the seafront but it's a great place to stay IMO. We have stayed there three times over the past four years on our Tenby holidays.
