I am going away in the summer and there is a possibility I may have to put my camera gear in the hold of the plane (and via Jo'burg too) as I would rather keep my wedding dress with me on the plane!

I am starting to look at cases, just in case I can't spread my camera gear, wedding gear and laptop amongst the 4 of us flying! (they will also be taking their own hand luggage too - not just carrying mine, unfortunately!) We have a 7kg hand luggage allowance, and the bags get weighed if they are bigger than a normal womans handbag - overweight bags go in the hold, no arguments - believe me I have tried in the past.

I know of Peli and Storm, is there any other brands I should look at too?

I willl be taking:

40D
17-85
70-200 f2.8
300 F4 L
1.4x tc
possibly a 2x tc and a 10-22 and an EOS 300v with kit lens

not too worried about cables, chargers, filters, cleaning stuff, tripod and monopod as these can all go in the normal suitcases. (with locks on the zips and two locking straps sometimes cable ties too - we fly through Jo'burg every year, so know the drill! :shake: )

I am thinking something like a Peli 1510 should be ok size wise, but wondering about the alternative brands really.

Thanks in advance.

I got the peli for taking as hand luggage, my other half wont let me as its way too heavy, It would take all the knocks in the hold though, very strong and lockable too

I know the Peli would do the job admirably, but was hoping there would be some cheaper alternatives as this is a one off situation really.

I ended up buying a hard suitcase: http://www.trueshopping.co.uk/produ...lack_ABS_Lightweight_Suitcase/4473/51230.html

In this I can fit my Tamrac Expedition 7 with gear inside, my Swissgear 7317 laptop rucksack with 17" laptop and accessories, and there's still room left over.

I thought about a Pelicase, but then I wanted something I could use just as a normal suitcase too.

Mind you, could've bought a small Pelicase for what it cost...

Oooh thanks!! You have given me a great idea there!

Can I ask a you a question about it though, which doesn't seem to be answered on the link? Is the case solid, or does it bend a bit?

Cheers! :D

There's a bit of flex, they're not made of heavy thick plastic like pelicases. They'd be too heavy to use as a suitcase otherwise, plus a bit of flex is handy as it should prevent the case from cracking should it suffer a fall.

I would still wrap anything up inside the case against shock damage (or stick it in appropriate bags like I'm doing). There's plenty options on hard cases, a lot cheaper than the one I just bought too, no idea what they're like though.

Thanks for letting me know - I would definately be putting my normal camera bag in the case, wrapped up in clothes too!!

I am not going till the summer, and needed a new case anyway, so will have a look around at the options!

I'm off to the Falklands beginning of Feb. I probably won't remember but if I do, I'll tell you how it fared.

We have a 7kg hand luggage allowance...
Have you looked at using other airlines? Their carry-on allowances vary enormously! (Example: BA 23kg, Virgin Atlantic 6kg.) There's a good reference here.

We use Explorer Cases for our big kit. Other ones you might want to look at are Underwater Kinetics and Indestructible Cases. (I'm not claiming Explorer are better - it's just that we discovered them first.)

Thanks for the advice Stewart, but having flown with other carriers in the past and between us and our family having absolute shocking experiences, we stick with Emirates now, unless there is a significant price difference, as we prefer them to the others in terms of service, in flight entertainment, food, seat comfort and leg room, also the big plus for me I am not on a plane for more than 8 hours!!

Thanks for those tips, I will look into them!

Used Peli 1550 for visit to states, I didnt have to worry bout it I had TSA approved locks on. This saved locks being cut off by Depy of Homeland Security (USA Customs). They dont ask question over there they simply take them off with bolt cutters to check contents. After you check in the customs boyz and girlz do their bit behind the schenes.

Unlike my cloth case that was seriously battered and damage when we touched down in Florida. If you value your equiptment invest in a good hard case and save alot of worry and fretting about your kit.
Loads of used Peli`s around and you can get a new foam set for under £30.

Hi,

Have you considered the Calumet variation of the Peli ? Many shapes and sizes.

Don't seem to badly priced in comparison
