Hi there,

I thought that this would be the best place to ask about this kind of thing and hope someone might be able to help me with this.

My problem is that I use shoulder bags. They're great, except for when they're heavy. At the moment, I need to carry two bodies, two flashguns, a 50mm prime, a 70-200, a 17-40 and a 24-70 along with filters, a 13 inch MacBook Pro, chargers, cables, triggers etc. I've got a Kata PR460 for this and it's a great bag. Just a shame it's not so great for my back!

Any ideas from anyone? I don't want to go buying a Peli or equivalent case and finding that it's really too small. I live in Scotland, and that's part of the problem, really. There are no good camera shops round here where I could even try them out. If only Warehouse Express was in Edinburgh.

I'm looking for a case with wheels and with dividers, not foam. I know it's going to be expensive, but I want to know I've considered all the options before I go for it. There a number of companies out there selling cases which are identical to Peli cases, so could anyone recommend any in particular?

Many thanks,

Allan

If you dont need the hardcase but want the roller option then something likeThis might be worth consideration. The Lowepro roller like that can also double as a backpack if you needed for other occasions.

Hi there,

Many thanks for your reply. I'm looking for a hard case, really. Something I can lug around without worrying too much if someone's going to put something heavy on top.

Where are you based Allan?

I have a couple of Pelis, one bigger one to store kit in (1600) and one to fly with(1510).

The 1510 has wheels and is carry on sized. The 1600 has no wheels and is heavy when full. The 1610 is very similar in size but has wheels and the 1620 is a bit deeper. In the 1600 I have

1DIV
40D
12-24
17-40
24-70
70-200 2.8
300 f4
2x 580EXII
2x batteries
Hoods etc.

The 1510 obviously holds less but will fit my 500 f4, body, 70-200, 24-70 and batteries cards etc

Go to Calumet in Edinburgh and try them out.

Neil,

Thanks for your message. I think the 1510 would be a little too small, looking at pictures on the internet. Perhaps the 1610 would be a better option, actually, as it appears to have a good amount of space in it, and the wheels are pretty much essential. I'm based in Edinburgh.

admirable, I think that Calumet in Edinburgh's just some kind of studio and a despatch building. i don't think it's the kind of shop one could walk into. Thanks for that, though.

Allan

You can go into Calumet in Edinburgh. They do carry some stock. I've been in the past. It's not the biggest shop in the world though and it's a pig to find!

I'm actually heading away this week but if you're in no great rush I could maybe meet you at some point the following week if you want to see my 2 cases in the flesh. I think the 1510 will be too small but it'll give you an idea of the wheel set up and things like that

You can lead a horse to water..............

Neil,

That'd be great, actually. I'm away too next week, but it would be useful to see how they are. Let me know if you're around at any point and thanks for your help! allan@amdphoto.co.uk.

admirable, I never realised that was the case. Although I was aware they were down in Leith, I'd never heard any photographers talking about it.

Do take into consideration the peli at least (guessing others as well) have quite small hard wheels and are only really good for smooth/ish surfaces anything slightly rough and its a very hard shake on the case... everything gets packed in OK but real bad vibrations in slightly rough...

Plus with a Peli you can stand on it, sit on it as a stool, which I used to do a lot when shooting rugby/footy.

I would suggest that you get a Storm rather than a Peli, similar build quality but with better catches LINK

Yes, as Martyn says, the catches on Storm cases are far superior to Peli.

Have Peli merged with Storm though, because on the link, the products are listed as Peli Storm cases?

They may have done Mark, I had not noticed
