I was all set to buy a peli 1550 to put all my stuff in, did a quick search on here and found reference to a maplin copy for £49.99, what's everyone views on peli vs maplin, my use is really just to keep all my stuff in one place and to make it easy to carry all my stuff in one go in the car.

Peli is extremely tough and well made, if you will never need that then buy cheaper.

Is the maplin case made from a similar rubbery plastic as peli?

I'm never going to drop it at great heights or abuse the case, more just use it as a storage box for all my bits on one box, and if I'm going out its all in the boot of the car, knowing its not getting knocked together

Hmmmmm just watched it on YouTube, they really do have a lot of faith and confidence in there products, its extreme what they put it through and survives, you wouldnt see maplin case with standing that.

I'm off out to take a trip to maplin and see what it's like in the flesh, but the peli got me double minded just knowing its really safe

I have the Maplin case, and for just storing kit in the house and transporting in the back of the car it's more than good enough. On the other hand if I were to travel to the amazon I'd definitely go for the Peli - awesome gear!!

I've got the maplin case, it's Ok and made of hard plastic, an i use it for a couple of studio lights, peli are a cut above the maplins though. You pays your money...

We use Peli cases at work, and ship equipment overseas and back on a regular basis.
They are an excellent product, and virtually indestructible.

thanks for all your comments, I went and seen both and ended up buying the peli, the maplin case is suprising good value for money, and would protect my cameras and lens for all my needs the only thing put me off was it was quite shallow and has a deep lid, so the camera would only be half sunk into the foam, were the peli the lid was shallow so the body can be sunk right in.

I'll throw up a few pics once i've plucked the foam and fitted all my stuff

Theres a thread here about the Maplins cases. Ive still got mine but bought a Peli for my camera gear and my telescope stuff lives in the maplin one now

I have the Peli its very well bulid, even if i was just using to go into a car i would still go for the Peli, some cheap cases just fall to bits very quickly :)

Fianlly just finished, takes ages to pick all the bits out, wasn't really happy with the finish so found some foam roughly the right size so cut it out neatly and stuck it to the peli foam.

i'll prob get the maplin one aswell for my video camera, as its brilliant value for the money.

All the stuff in the peli 1550 :D

thanks gramps, Just went to lift it there boy its heavy!! lol

 yes that's the downside!

Peli cases are superb. I keep most of my kit within a Peli 1500 case on top of my wardrobe for safety, but managed to drop the lot whilst getting it down once. After a fall of around 6ft, my body and lenses (40D, 10-22, 24-105L, 100-400L at the time) were fine, and the case itself was of course unmarked. It has also been placed within the hold for several holidays and even survived Heathrow's Bagage Handling monkeys.

The only downside is that the foam is expensive to replace (with real Peli foam), when you change your kit.

That's the thing I found frustrating about my Maplin case, having to stick to one configuration once you'd plucked the foam. That setup looks great, but I'd find it really frustrating having to remove my lens every time I put the camera away. I hope it works out better for you.

I've always one body and lens in a small shoulder bag for when I go out, just wanted one place to store everything when not being used, sort of committed now, least you can get replacement foam if I find it frustrating

Just got two of the maplin cases arrived today, and I have to say the quality for the price is outstanding. I don't envisage myself trekking through rainforests any time soon so for most peoples needs these are top notch. For the price of the case + foam you'd be lucky to get just the foam for the peli but like people have said the premium price is for the renowned quality of peli cases.

Now go throw it off a building ;)

I have several Pelis but the one I use most is a Storm rolling case (same firm - slightly different styling). The very first time I used it, it fell off the back of a 4X4 going up a very steep slope and banged a few rocks on the way down. All the kit was fine :)

And yes, I really took mine to the Amazon.

Not sure I'd want to store kit in a sealed dark space long term due to the possibility of fungus developing. Might be ok with some silica gel sachets in the case.

You're probably more likely to get fungal growth if you keep the camera in a bag instead. The risk of spores getting into the bag is higher than a case but I think the important thing is air circulation and avoiding dramatic changes in environment (temperature and humidity). When I kept my gear in my bag I used to leave the zip open.

Some good advice from the Canon website on camera and lens care.
