I am planning to buy a peli to transport my camera gear to and from sports events. I need to carry two canon bodies (1d MK iv and 1Dx) plus the two bigger lenses 70-200 f2.8 and 300 f2.8. and hopefully smaller lenses as well if there is any space remaining. Can anyone tell me if they will fit in the 1510 with dividers or wether I might need the 1560. Reading previous threads and looking at various literature does not seem to refer to this mix of equipment. Thanks

David, I have both. In the 1560 I keep my "general purpose" gear as it is the
bigger of the two, and my "extended lens kit (2x PC lenses, macro stuff etc)"
that I don't need at every sortie in the smaller 1510. Cool cases for the road.

I fit a 300 ƒ2.8, the whole holy trinity and a single digit body, 2x SB900 and
plenty of small gizmos in the 1560.

Thanks for the helpful reply Kodiak Qc. It seems that the 1560 might be the preferred option although I wondered about not trying to put the 300 f2.8 in a peli but simply carry it in its original case. That way the 1510 would fit the bill. That having been said, I would be pulling the peli using one hand, carrying the 300 in its case in the other and then would need to think about the laptop! (unless I get the laptop insert for the peli?) More to think about. Any more contributions would be welcome but thanks again Kodiak Qc.

Hi David,

I have the Peli 1560 wheeled version plus the 1520 and 1500 for different events. Can't comment on the 1510 really but obvious falls between the 1500-1520.

The 1560 will swallow everything without a problem (Nikon D3 & D3X Pro bodies, (and a Bronica on occasion), 70 - 200 f2.8 plus four other reasonable sized pro lenses). Whilst the 1560 accommodates everything, its really not necessary for most jobs, too heavy to drag around and do I really need everything else?

No.

Its a good 'go to', when I have that other accessory; the car. It would also make a good podium if you need to stand up but other than that, it is a bit large for general walking around.

The 1520 is a much better all rounder, whilst the 1500 mainly is for my speed lights etc but on occasion a bit small and often the backpack replaces it. You probably can get all you need in the smaller case but I am not au fait with the Canon 300mm in terms of size.

Also consider whether you might ever need to fly with them at some stage in the future.

Whilst I have talked my way onto a flight with the 1560 as hand baggage, this would probably be a no no nowadays and the smaller cases are more feasible although it all depends on the airline in question.

The 1510 (1514) will fit what you want. It's my preferred case as it is smaller (airline carry-on) and lighter. I've even added a pelican shoulder strap kit to mine... but it is a cumbersome b****r to carry that way.
I don't load mine anything like this, but to give you an idea: http://www.sportsshooter.com/dmc/pelican/pages/7.html

Thanks Ian. I will not be planning to take my sports gear on flights and so it does not really com into the equation. I think that from what you say, it might be slightly too much weight for an old man like me! I am getting closer to the 1510 with every breath!

Thanks

Thanks Steven, the photograph has almost confirmed my decision to go for the 1510.

Nottingham no longer has the dearth of camera shops it once had to go and try these things out, but its not just the boxes but the weight of the kit in them that makes a difference and only you decide that. Do like Pelis for the robustness factor though whatever the size.

I use a Peli 1600 (non-wheel version) for 2 1Dx's with a 300/2.8 and 200/2 all ready to shoot. If I reverse the hood on the 300/2.8 then I can add a 1DmkIV/70-200/2.8.

Thanks Bob. So, how do you move it about? Not into carrying. Have you got a "trolley" ?

There are more pics as well if you use the "previous/next" links... and that's a 400/2.8 in there.
Thanks Steven, I had missed the previous/next images. Very useful to see the layouts.

Particularly interested to see how far the handle extends. There is enough space for a laptop bag to be strapped on top,of the Peli bag. That will m are things even easier.

Decision made. Peli 1510 it is.

I use the 1514 (1510 w/ padded dividers) and the lid organizer. The lid organizer is in place of foam so stuff is a bit less protected, but better organized for little stuff (plates/cards/batteries/filters/etc). It stays with me so I'm less concerned than w/ a bigger case.

I use both the 1510 and the 1560.The 1560 carries my canon equipment, 2 off 1D mkiv, 70- 200mm f2.8,24-70mm,1.4 convertor, flash gun, spare batteries and 15" laptop and plenty of room to spare.I have changed the wheels on both as i had a lens vibrate to bits.

Just when I was settling on 1510 you send this! I also notice that Kipax has the 1560. Now wonder if I should go the extra mile and get the 1560 - Incidentally, already ordered the wheels!

Can also get monopod and waterproofs in the case,I use padded divider from my 1510. case.jpg

Hi David, what wheels did you order ??

thats the ones I fitted, highly recommend them..You would think Peli would come up with something

I use a 1560 to contain:

1D Mk 4 with either 70-200 f2.8 IS attached or 24-105L.
7D body only
70-200 f4
17-40 f4
50 f1.8
2x flashguns
memory cards
flash triggers
batteries
x1.4 t/c and x2.0 t/c
pouch of cleaning equipment
and a few other odds and ends
I carry a Sigma 120-300 in its own case.

Depending on the event I will either use this, or decant what I need into a Lowepro vertex backpack or stealth reporter shoulder bag.

What's the deal with the wheels? I've never had an issue with mine...
A number of people over the years have suggested that the standard wheels that ship with the Peli cases are poor quality and made of the same material as the case shell. As a consequence they give no cushioning when going over rough ground and as such can cause undue vibration. There is an easy modification that can be done to replace the standard wheels with the ones referred to earlier and they create a much smoother ride for the contents. Best I can do - hope it makes sense

I have Peli 1614 and it is heavy but plenty of rooms, i put 4 DSLRs if i want with my 300 2.8mk1 and 70-200 and even 100-400 if i want with few smaller lenses and some other accessories.

Your post about wheels making me to re-think about upgrading the wheels of my Pelican, i feel it is wearing out time after time quickly, so maybe i will go with your choice maybe.

Please do not regard me as the expert on this matter. I am merely doing what others have suggested in the past regarding the wheels on the Peli. I only got my Peli this morning and the wheels do not arrive until tomorrow so I am not talking from experience!
That having been said, the recommendation has come from a number of reliable "sources" so I am confident that it is a worthwhile enhancement that will help to protect equipment and make pulling your gear around slightly less difficult

I had a 70 -200 that had problems with the internals and when i got it repaired they said that it was caused by vibration, they said it was getting a common fault with professional photographers who transported their gear in Peli cases. It is the constant vibration from the wheels and if you change to softer wheels there is less vibration.I have noticed some of the footy snappers have changed over to rucksack type bags, but you can't sit on them.

It's ok, i know that you asked others to get the answers, and you can get the answer or understand better than me, it is like you are the end of many experts before you and you are gonna test, and i am not in rush, i may buy those wheels after 3-5 months which is long enough to check out your impression/test or others.
