Pedal Power Thread

I looked at one before getting the suppressor frame

I do like the Matt Black frame. I would've chosen that if last years model was available, but I quite like the buffed alloy too. Did you get out on yours?

The suspension, on mine, is very compliant & so it absorbed some of the jump opportunities on my usual trails, but it was great on the bigger stuff. There is loads of suspension adjustment, particularly on the Cane Creek shock, so I have a lot of tweaking to do :) I may have different settings for home & away.

I'm going to Afan & Bike Park Wales in June, I think it'll be very at home there.

finished my first ever sportive today, glorious weather, actually had top shed a layer half way round due to the heat. This was after they were predicting snow earlier in the week :D

and a we vid of me finding out I don't have enough volume reducers in the shock lol

I've got a "supervised FTP Test" today at the Cardio Rehab Physio centre... Time to see how this winter's work on the indoor trainer and the past couple of months of actually getting out on the road has improved my overall endurance fitness...

To say I'm not looking forward to it one bit is a slight understatement. You know it's potentially going to be a tough one when you spot the Resus Cart in the corner of the room...

I go in for my 20 minutes of agony in about 10 minutes... if I don't post in here before 4pm, expect the worst... no flowers, donations to BHF.

I'm out, and back home - just looking at the data in GoldenCheetah... CP20 and FTP up 6.5% on February 6th figure with little/no "structured" training, just simply getting outside and riding the bike - probably a major factor being the fact that it's not exactly flat around here (at least not unless I head out eastwards out Selby way, where it's pretty much flat all the way to the coast...).

Better news is that the figures are actually up by 41% from November, and according to the Cardio guy, the med's that i'm on probably wipe out around 35-40% of my "top end" sustained power and endurance performance - hardly surprising when they limit my HrMax to under 140 instead of 170+ It does however bode well for when they finally start to wean me off some of the more agressive pills and potions, as adding 35-40% to the current FTP begins to look half way respectable again, and probably back to what I was pushing out 18 months ago, before all the medical problems. Now I just need to drop the 9-10kg that has crept on (and another 10 to keep it company!!)

You survived!

Good luck with the pill regime and with the weight loss.

Decided to have a roll down to one of the local villages on Saturday morning, to see a bike race that was passing through...

Looks like it was reasonably well promoted...

and they've got the security working overtime to make sure its safe...

Seems I wasn't the only person who decided to go and watch...

the locals were getting into the spirit of things as well...

Even the Press were out to record the event...

Knowing the state of the roads around here, they even arranged some form of neutral service...

but eventually, the time came when the race approached...

the peloton got closer - and then I realised what all the fuss was about...

Lizzie had decided to join in... that's her on the right with that funny rainbow banded jersey on if you didn't know ;)

Managed to get back for the Mens Race in the afternoon...

Where were we again, oh yes, to quote M. Prudhomme - "Gods Own County"...

Yet another Outrider shot... (the clever ones amongst you will realise that I shoot these to get my "eye in" ready for the race itself coming through... doesn't always work of course...)

Here come the leaders...

then, just before the chasing peloton arrived, word came through that there was a puncture in the leading group... fortunately these lads were on the case...

but sadly, that was pretty much the end of the fun for today, as the next vehicle along was this one...

All pics just for fun, I know they're just snapshots, don't require critique on them, I just thought that you may wish to see something of the womens race, just to prove that it existed other than at the rollout in Otley, and the finishing straight in Donny...

Nice news is that m8, whats your ftp up to now and when do they start to wean you off the meds?

it's still p*** poor to be honest - around 219 (that's down from well over 300 same time 2 years ago, before all the health issues... As to the meds, it's hard enough actually getting to see the specialists at the moment - I should have been there already for the 6 month follow up - the "rebore" went through on the 7th September - but I'm hoping that when I see them I can at least get the Beta-Blocker reduced - and I know that one of the other meds is only issued for a 12 month period after the stents are fitted, so that's going to be off the slate in september, but as to the others, it's pretty much anyones guess...

Currently riding a GT XCR 4000. It's an old bike now although I've had it from new. I don't ride as much as I used to but still get my shorts on now and again.

That was my thinking too so was instantly looking for the caveats but i couldnt find any.
did you go ahead with these?

I dropped the hunts but a pair of Novatec Jetfly's woll be heading to the bike on my birthday.
nice, remember to give us an update when they land :)

Looking for some advice/guidance. Currently ride a hybrid bike but looking to get back into biking a bit more. Used to have a mountain bike about 10 years ago I used to ride everywhere. Recently only been riding on the road on my hybrid.

Can't decide to go for a road bike or another mountain bike! I live in Cambridge so its far from hilly so mountain bike wise something along the lines of XC/trail hardtail would be more than enough or do I get a road bike, not really keen on doing sportives riding en mass isn't my thing and not overly sure dressing up in lycra is either!

If I get a mountain bike I think looking into driving to places like Swinely or Cannock Chase would be an option a few times a year.

@ian-83

Only you can answer road or MTB.

When I got back into bikes I bought a Mountain bike so that I could go off road on trails and such with my young boys. I then started to use my MTB on the road on my own which then led me to get a road bike!

I mainly use the road bike but the mountain bike gets regular outings on family rides.

I'm weighing up the pros and cons of both. Though test riding some road bikes today made me realised how much better they road compared to my hybrid on the same road surfaces! Probably due to less weight and the inclusion of a carbon fork over my all alloy hybrid

This is the decision that brought about a whole breed of bike, the cyclocross bike (aka gravel bike, adventure bike etc etc). Basically a road bike that can take big chunky tyres and has a higher bottom brackets to help off road - you get a road bike and a mountain bike for the cost of one bike and an extra pair of tyres (wheels as well if you're going to need to make quick changes).

I'll be honest - I bought myself a Cyclocross bike very much on that basis...

Bit of Background...

I've got a MTB. it's nice enough, solid (to the point of being completely over-built to be honest - it was specc'ed when I was around 50kg heavier than I am now, and specc'ed tough enough to cope with my riding around in the Peak District / Lakes) - On-One Inbred 456, 26" wheels, full XT groupset, disks (naturally) and a fairly uninspiring fork at the front. Forks were pretty much "consumable" items when I was at my heaviest - even the £500+ ones were very much "max rider weight of (well under mine)" - so blown seals, broken springs, knackered bushings, you name it. But, I rode, and I kept riding, even riding it locally, around my local trails - which are pretty much either bridleways, canal towpaths or sustrans routes - definitely nothing even slightly "gnarly" or "rad doood"... BUT, lugging this pig-iron 18+kg POS around meant I burned lots of kCals, and I lost weight. Quite a lot of it. And eventually I felt fit enough to risk riding one of my old road bikes. First time back on 21c tyres (yep, 21c - it was a 1990's full-on racing bike, and didn't have clearance for anything wider!) was terrifying, but in a good way - the speed, the freedom, the fact that it actually rolled uphill and didn't need to be "winched". Sold. 1 Modern Roadbike. Bought myself a Planet-X Superlight Alu frame, Ultegra Oily Bits and built myself some 36 spoke wheels (Ultegra Hubs, H-Plus Son Archetype Rims, DT-Swiss Stainless for the geeks) and pretty much didn't look back.

Thing Is, at the time I was a full-time carer to my parents - I basically got a couple of hours in a afternoon where I could go out, either to run errands, OR to get some exercise. So, I'd a choice of driving to the edge of the peaks and getting maybe 30 minutes on the MTB, before having to drive back (late) - OR go and ride "out of the door" - which 2 hours on the roadbike would see me getting a good 25+ miles in. Again, a no-brainer - more riding = more kCals burned = more fat lost.

three years on, and the mechanicals were getting a bit "creaky" - BUT - I'd promised myself if I hit my "first target" weight, I'd treat myself to a new bike. And I did, so I did. Finally felt light enough to risk Carbon. Dolan Tuono SL, Full Ultegra, FSA Team Issue Cockpit, Bloody Lovely. And I pensioned off the Planet-X to the indoor trainer. BUT, I now rode all year round. Bought some cheap wheels for the Dolan, and some Guards. Hated it - like having a greyhound and putting it in Gumboots. So dug the Planet-X our for another winter, and put the Dolan on the trainer instead. The Winter finally pretty much killed the Planet-X's componentry - and as it was 9 speed Ultegra, it was quite an expensive refurb.

Over the summer a plan dawned...

I no longer really rode my MTB on anything that needed anything so "overbuilt". But I did enjoy riding the offroad trails around home - it's a good way to get a hard cardio workout in a hour or so, in the rain... I also needed a "winter hack" bike - something that would happily take mudguards, 28c tyres - ideally would have disc brakes so it'd stop in the rain. Yep - I decided on a "not really very racy" Cyclocross Bike. Cannondale CaadX 105 Disc. Its got discs, it's got 2 bottle cages, mudguard and rack eyes, so I could use it as a light tourer if I wanted with a pair of tough 28c road tyres on it. Or, with a pair of 'Cross knobblies fitted, It's light enough (just about) to race if I wanted, it handles pretty well offroad, and its tough enough to cope with any of the non-gnar offroad that's on the menu in anything in my "out of the door" rides. I'm no longer performing the carer role (they've both sadly passed by now) but I still find myself being pretty heavily averse to wasting 1 hour driving to somewhere worthwhile to ride the MTB, only to be sick of the sight of the MTB within 40 minutes because it is just so heavy and slow and bloody miserable to ride. Then having to drive a hour back home, and another hour or so to clean the bike, and the car, and every stitch of clothing I was wearing.

If I lived In the Lakes, or the Welsh Hills, Or Scotland, or even the Peaks, then I'd probably think differently, but for me, at the moment, the MTB is overkill... a 'cross bike is where it is at for me for "mixed terrain" (road and off-road) stuff...

Of course, if someone's got a nice freebie Carbon 8kg Full-Suspension 29er they want to give me on long-term loan to convince me that MTB's still have their uses, I'm amenable...

well yeah they have their uses. whether you'll use one for what it's intended is another matter.

That's it exactly Neil - which is why I rambled on about the kind of riding I do - because for me, the MTB is pretty much up in the loft, and only gets dragged down and re-assembled if I'm going for a few days somewhere where it IS some use... for my local terrain, it's like taking a steamroller to a flower-pressing convention.

After reading your analogy it sums up how I feel about MTB's. Don't really want to get into the 1-2 hour car journey to take the bike out for say an hours ride then head home and clean bike/car/clothes/myself.

Least with a road bike it's usable out of my front door. But do I carbon or stick with alloy with looking to get carbon as a reward.

Carbon these days is in its middle age - so tried and trusted designs are readily available if you stick to the main manufacturers.

Alloy bikes are nice and lightweight but suffer from road buzz - the vibrations from the road - which can be lessened with carbon forks and seat post but still nowhere near as comfortable as a good carbon frame.

An alternative is an old fashioned Reynolds 531 steel frame which will be comfy but not quite as good all round as Carbon IMHO.

You then need a decent pair of wheels (stock wheels are almost always useless) - google Campagnolo Zonda for a general idea of a good pair of wheels.

The advantages of a road bike are that it is lighter, the wheels/tyres rotate better and you can get on the drops when riding into the wind.

heads up guys, this weekend's the Eroica Brittania. Anyone within striking distance of Buxton could well get some cracking pictures of people riding "fairly old" (read 1987 or older) racing bikes, right through to some real classic vintage kit... Oh, and most of the riders are in matching outfits - at the start, it's honestly like wandering around a timewarp version of one of the classic races...

I've just seen the news that Chris Boardman's mum has been killed whilst out cycling, seems she was a very keen rider and used to race in her youth. Tragic and shocking that it appears that the driver just drove off :(

Yes, really sad.

There was Chris Biardman's tribute at the end of the TdF highlights last night. Just his words agai st the backdrop of yesterday's stage. Very fitting.

I hope they catch the person involved. No excuse for not stopping.

Yes I read that as well pretty low life that hit and left a 70 odd year old woman to die :-(

What is the world coming to.

cant see anything about it being hit and run on the bbc page, just that they're asking for witnesses which is normal
I'm sure I read that somewhere, but it could just have been someone taking the wrong interpretation of asking for witnesses, as you said.
