Pedal Power Thread

Cheers Neil. I've had a look at SRAM and it looks ok, so I'll have a look at the X7 stuff.

I'm re-joining the cycle club!!

I haven't cycled heavily since last summer when my old racer got nicked. Just bought myself a £300 road bike from decathlon and have to say, I'm pretty impressed with what I got for the money!

The best bit: the £4 phone holder I got from ebay ;)

Nice. I do like the way the decathlon bikes look. Understated is the best way to describe it!

I've just dug out my old Kona NuNu 1998 vintage as I need to lose some weight and get fitter. This thread has encouraged me!! Found the front shifter didn't shift, so I've temporarily replaced it with a new, but cheap, deore shifter so can start to use the bike. I've also found that 8 speed stuff is now pretty rare so have decided to replace the existing gear set with, proabably, 3 x 9 speed. So my question, does anyone use SRAM gear sets on their MTB's' rather than Shimano, and if you do, any horror stories with X9 kit? And rather than just changing to 3 x 9 speed, any advantage in going to SRAM and fitting 2 x 10? Any other reccomendations - I can get away with upgrading components, but I can't get away with buying a new bike!!

Thanks,

Cliff

I run SRAM X5's and I'm yet to find a fault.
I'm running a 3x9 setup which suits my needs although I'm only ever in 14 to 27 when on the road.

we have the commonwealth XC MTB track just up the road and tried it out for the first time on Monday. Took a couple of vids of the track. I checked out vids on youtube before hand and the course is more difficult than it look as I found out lol

had swapped out the TPC to ABS+ on my Manitou minutes and it make a big difference really need to get a platform rear too.

Had a good one yesterday...

First week using cleats. Went to take my foot out to step onto the pavement...

Didn't unclip in time lol.

I practiced on grass first in the back garden to save my pride as much as I could. I still panic sometimes cause I need new cleats and the don't always come out on the first twist.

Luckily, I don't mind looking like a prat sometimes haha. I valued the comedy factor since I didn't get hurt.

I guess it has to happen at least once...I road off laughing to myself

Need to flog my hybrid - Specializes Sirrus Sport...any ideas where I could look for buyer ??

*snip*

That's one hell of a spec for the money. Blimey, I remember when all £300 would get you was half a RSJ on cart-wheels.

Hmm, tempting.

I love it. Done 100 miles on it this week and no problems so far. I was going to spend around 700 on one from evans before I scoped out this.

Have to say, it's a pleasure to ride and very light, even with rather heavy pedals.

Gah! Junedoggle challenge on strava says I have done 250km but no badge. Looking a little closer I have in fact done 249.9km. Luckily I am cycling home this evening! ;)

I'd never spotted the challenges on there before. Just signed up to Junedoggle too and I'm currently 30270th place (out of 77971) with 340km.

But I have found a few times recently that it's not tracking (or possibly uploading) properly. My morning commute today should have been about 11miles but is only showing the last 1.8 miles :'(

Well - that's gone quickly. Noticed the chain was sounding a little rough on my way home yesterday, and thought "i'll give it a clean and lube tomorrow" - before doing so, I ran the "chain checker" over it and the chain's had it. Just borderline on the 0.7 setting (replace it now) rather than the 1.0 setting (replace it and the cassette, and maybe even the rings!)

Initial thoughts were "bloody hell, 10 speed chains don't last as well as the 9's" (yes, this IS my first 10 speed rig! Hack bike is still on 9-speed ultegra from years ago!)

Second thoughts were "so how many miles HAS it done then..." Delved into my ride log and found I've actually put just over 2,000 miles into the new bike since I built it up at the start of March. As I normally got between 2,000 and 2,500 out of the 9-speed kit (i'm a big lad, and it takes a bit of hammer) I suppose I shouldn't grumble too much.

Anyone got recommendations for long-lasting 10 speed chains - i'm no weight-weenie or anything, and I'd prefer not to have gold finished chains on the bike if possible (though I know that the Titanium Nitride gold finishes ARE more for durability than bling...)

what apps are people using for cycling. I've got cyclemeter and I'm trying bikebrain.

Another Strava user here. I think there are quite a few of us on here that use it.

Tried most of the apps, Strava - Endomondo - Garmin Fit - MapMyRide - they're all a load of cock, I bought a Garmin 800 instead

I do like the Strava website though...

well today I got read, packed the car up and headed to cathkin braes. Got the bike out, shoes one and went to test the brakes when my hope tech lever went straight to the bar. Looked down and it was ****ing DOT 5.1 out of the caliper. the connection between the caliper and hose was loose.

wouldn't have been so bad except the carpark was full due to the official opening of the course

Either the GPS chip in my phone was having a bad day, or I became amazing at cycling (even cycling on water)!
Check out my max and average speeds - I AM LEGEND :lol:
