Pedal Power Thread

I was overtaken by two 'fellow' cyclists this morning...
and no...I wasn't cycling slow
one overtook me on red lights while I was waiting for green light - and his bike was making so much noise! [squeak, squeak, squeak...squeak] and second one at same lights...
not too mention of latter one using middle of the road to overtake all buses with traffic coming his way all the time....

am I too cautious ?

I wonder what drivers thought of me waiting for green light while others stormed through red...
DUMB-A$SES!!!

Are you too cautious? NO! By riding defensively (or even just not agressively!), you'll live a lot longer. Too many psych(o)lists think that just because a car (or truck) driver will generally be held to be at fault when they get smacked off they won't be hurt - dead is however dead.

As a long term biker (motor as well as pedal), I've never been involved in any vehicle - vehicle contact incident. I've come way too close for comfort a few times but expecting every Joe C*** to pull out on me has meant that I've had the levers/pedals covered and ready to stop/swerve. Most recently, a driver looked me straight in the eyes then pulled across in front of me as I was going straight over a set of (green) traffic lights. I had my headlight on (generally don't, having had some tw@ tell me he thought I was flashing him across...) as well as right of way. His children may have learned a few new words - spoken in a normal tone through his open window ("There's no need for that language!" "Well, there was no need for you to try to f****** kill me!")

Am definitely not too cautious and I don’t cycle defensively...
I just use what some lack...
Common Sense :)

I've just ordered my new bike through the cycle2work scheme.
So on Friday I'll be collecting a nice new shiny 2013 Boardman comp 18" MTB.
Last time I had a bike it was as 2005 spec Trek 4500........world apart.

Missed having a bike so looking forward to getting this one.

Being overtaken when waiting at red lights drives me insane, especially if the person then moves off at snails pace (I don't mind if they got there first). It's like being in a queue to buy something, have someone jump the queue, and then spend 15 minutes arguing about something oblivious to everyone else waiting.

In more positive news I made my commute for the first time today under my 30 minute target, with about 45 seconds to spare. I was very confident until some dastardly red lights added minutes right at the end. Now to beat 29.

Lovely day for a cycle today, cycle back from work is at around 10pm tonight which should be excellent and relatively clear.

Same here...overtaken just for sake of overtaking....then you overtake them again as they are unable to keep to your pace...all of that with traffic makes my average speed low...
Because it is so shirt, I try to push myself as much as I can.

I have only 6km to work with loads of roundabouts and lights...4roundabouts and 10 lights if not more...

Nice one, I do like the boardman range of bikes. Get some photos up when you get it, unless you're out riding it too much!

You wont be disappointed with the Boardman. I went for the team 'Race' and absolutely love it. I got mine in February, after not even being near a bike in nearly 20 years, and have just recently done my longest ever ride at 40 miles.

Here's the pic from the website for those that like to look.
A new toy!...........I'm such a child!

I do like the boardmans, I had the first Team MTB they did when they initially launched. Great bike, but I decided that I preferred trail riding more and the XC setup of the boardman didn't suit it, found my weight a bit too far forward making drops a bit scary!

So, I accidentally ended up in Condor Cycles after work. A couple of hours later (post bike fitting, test rides and component discussion) I have now ordered a Condor Italia with campag veloce groupset. Great shop and great help- got to try everything and they made speccing up a bike very easy. Now 4 weeks to wait...

 now that is a bike we need pictures of! Glad you went the Campagnolo route too ;)

Now I'd best hide before I kick off a shimano/sram/campagnolo debate to rival Nikon/canon/Pentax and windows/apple/Linux

I tried all three and the campag shifting system made sense in my head. The brake lever position was better too. The sram double tap system wasn't bad and I just found the shimano shifters using the brake lever weird.

I so can't wait!

I'd not heard of Condor before but just had a look - lovely looking frames! I cycle about 100miles a week but unfortunately don't think I could ever justify spending that much on a bike :-(

Cycle to work takes a little of the pain out of it. I figured if I wanted a decent bike, best get fully fitted and the setup I wanted rather than order from the Internet and hope for the best. My current bike was from wiggle and after my fitting today I now know what is wrong with it for me- quite a lot! No wonder I have been getting some knee and back pain!

The bike will be pretty much black apart from the logos so should look superb!

Condor are robbers, when you come out that shop alot of money has gone from your wallet ha ha

What do people use for outside storage of their bikes? I need something dry and secure for the new bike (and then the inevitable one that the wife wants!).

Depends if your insurance has any special requests..

Mine lives in the spare room for that reason :D

I will need to check. Unfortunately we have no spare room! Currently looking at the Asgard metal sheds. I might also look into separate insurance.

Shed, coach bolts, ground anchor, dirty great security light

Insurance plus gold our at least silver rated locks.

But my ribble lives in a flat behind a table or next to a piano( depends sheet I leave it)
While at work it lives in a spare locked room -we don't allow bikes in to building but some of us can break rules-especially if in charge of them;)
Still have it insured....it has accident insurance as well

Who are people insured with and do they have any experience of making a claim with them? Any reports on good/bad companies would be hugely appreciated!

never had to make a claim.
Many people use their household insurance for bikes.
Few pages back I have provided a link to insurers that LCC uses.
Checked them and they are not too expensive – am glad that I have cancelled with CycleGuard as they are a rip off in their premiums…and they have changed their policy now – in past it did not matter how old bike – unless older than 4-5 years; and you would get full value – new for old if claimed. Now every year value of the bikes falls by 25% a year and yet, their premiums are still high!!

Do not use CycleGuard – they are part of insurers of PhotoGuard – I have cancelled my Photo gear insurance with them as well only to see that they have charged me after I have cancelled…

Is membership to CTC or LCC worthwhile? I am also considering insurance and the cost of proper chains/locks/anchors etc is quite eye opening!

Well here she is looking all nice and clean........for a while! :D
She's a sweet ride (if you excuse the play on words) and nicely put together.
The bike technician at Halfords checked every nut and bolt before I left and showed me a few tips for the hydraulic brakes etc.
Proof that their not all monkeys there.

hmmm
LCC membership gives:

FREE third-party insurance FREE legal helpline FREE public liability insurance Great deals on theft insurance...
I wonder what kind of insurance...membership is only £36 per year

aaaaa it is only 3rd party insurance....

so not sure if it is worthwhile then...

You can get 3rd party liability insurance with British cycling, and there are voucher codes online to give you 12months membership for the price of 9 - i.e. £21/year.
I'm looking at signing up to that.

I also have no spare room but I still keep my road bike + mountain bike in my bedroom.

The only problem encountered so far was when one of my road bike tyres suddenly decided to instantly deflate from 150psi in the middle of the night - frightened the life out of me!

 I sometimes jump when deliberately deflating my tyres from full so I can only imagine them doing that by themselves whilst you're fast asleep!
