I honestly do not know if this is an urban myth or not, but we do get 'Woodie-Woodpecker' turning up from time to time in out garden. By the time I get my camera ...whoosh-gone.

I made some holes in a wooden stand and shoved some PB in the holes. Needless to say no WW turns up!

Is it a myth, or do I have it completely wrong?

Thanks

Mike

I have not heard of doing this with peanut butter, but drilling holes in a log and putting peanuts in is a fairly well known thing. I have tried it and it works, but then greater spotted woodpeckers will eat quite a lot of things, so I can't say making a peanut log brought them into the garden.

However, the woodpeckers eat fat cakes so they could well take peanut butter too.

Thanks Dave, I guess also mealy worms (dried) would also bring them into view?

The only thing I know that is attracted to peanut butter are Pine Martins.

Woodpeckers like mealworms and peanuts and a bit of seed as a supplement.

I watched a program recently, if I remember right this chap drilled a whole in a post and filled it with fat.Cant remember the program but I think it may of been country file.

Great Spotted Woodpeckers are very attracted to a bit of peanut butter.

Our GSWs are quite keen on peanuts, but they go totally nuts :) over suet pellets. I'm planning on buying some suet-coated peanuts to see what they make of those.

I have a male, female and juvenille that visits every day. Loves the suet blocks, pecks away all day at these but they are very quick though.
