I have a week off next week and thinking of visiting the Peak District.

I've not been there before so looking for some suggestion on where to stay and places to visit?

Thanks in advance :)

Some suggestions:

Monsal Head

1. Mam Tor and Hope Valley

2. Padley Gorge

3. Alport Castles

4. Lyme Hall and Cage

5. Lathkill Dale and Over Haddon

6. Stanage Edge

7. Leash Fen

8. Chrome and Packhouse Hills

9. The Roaches and Hen Cloud

10. Crowden Valley

11. Upper Dovedale

12. Goyt Valley

13. Curbar Edge

14. Luds Church

15. Rockhall Cottage

16. Fairbrook

17. Howden Dam

18. Peters Stone

19. Kinder Scout

20. Arbor Low Stone Castle

21. Millers Dale

22. Back Tor

23. Higger Torm- short walk

24. Three Shires Head

25. Winnat's Pass

There is plenty of accommodation, probably best to select your area and search there.

Wow thanks, wasn’t expecting such a list, didn’t realise there was so much there!

I thought there may have been a central location good for all within a short drive.

I’ll go through the list and see what I like and go from there :)

I can also recommend the book Photographing the Peak District by Chris Gilbert and Mick Ryan if you would like some detailed guidance. I think Mick has some connection with this forum.

Hopefully you get some decent weather.

If you are into funghi then the walk along the south sides of Derwent and Howden dams will take you into some very interesting areas for funghi at this time of year. And some nice scenic shots along the way.

Hathersage is a good base (if this isn't too late)

I live an hour away from the Peaks and was looking for inspiration for new places, andI wasn't expecting such a comprehensive list either. This will be used in the coming months!

A little late as I didn't go last October but have just come back from a few days there.

I took your suggestion and stayed in Hathersage in The Fox House hotel and it was an ideal place for a base, thanks.

However, I don't know why but I didn't really like the area, it was much busier than I expected and I just didn't find anywhere I actually liked or felt inspired by,

But I've been there now so I can cross that off my list :)

I would add Bamford Edge to that list too. Great view looking towards Derwent Reservoir.

Plus, depending how far north you want to go, Dovestone Reservoir is worth a visit too.

Shame because there are some fantastic photo opportunities in the Peak District. Just taking a walk around the Derwent and Howden dams could use up 20 or more photos. Then there is Tideswell, a very pretty little town. There are a lot of tourists in high season, but there are also lots of places where they don't get to.

I did Derwent on the first day, I reckon it would be better in Autumn and when I was there the water wasn't running down the dams or plug holes which was a shame.

I bought the Photographing the Peak District book before I went and there wasn't much I liked in there, so that probably should have made me think twice.

It was nice few days though but I'll put that in my list with the Cotswolds of places not to visit again :(

It's a lovely area, but IME it's absolutely heaving with people wherever I've been in the Northern part of the Peaks, which rather spoils it!

That’s a shame but we all have different preferences. Were you expecting a different type of landscape? Out of interest do you like the Lake District?

I think I just didn't like the landscape, I thought Winnats pass was quite interesting but Mam Tor was pretty boring yet very busy. I quite like the Lake Distrcit and been there a few times, it was on my list if I hadn't gone to the PD.

I am convinced you didn't see the best of the peak district if you are coming away with a negative opinion. Did you go up Kinder Scout? Did you visit Bakewell? Or Chatsworth house? Or Stanage edge? It's a beautiful part of the world.

Stange Edge yes, it wasn't far from where we stayed, by the Longshaw estate. We spent a couple of hours or so in Bakewell, it was a nice town but a small version of Bath. From there went to Three Shires Head. Chatsworth house just reminded me of Blenheim palace and I hated that place. Also went to Lyme Hall which was OK as it free to enter as National Trust member. Padley Gorge which again was close to where we stayed and I had hopes for was disappointing but probably better in Autumn although there was still some autumn leaves around.

Ahh OK, you just weren't feeling it. I think sometimes when we aren't in the best frame of mind, we can really dislike a place and judge it much more harshly than when in a sunnier mood. Maybe you will visit it in the future in glorious weather and enjoy it more.

Well ... may I ask what you were hoping to see in the Peak District? Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeeste sweeping majestically... ?

:ROFLMAO:

I really don't know why people recommend Mam Tor
I think it might be because it's a great location if there is a cloud inversion. The first time I went there was because I'd seen a cloud inversion photo on Flickr so wanted to experience that for myself and it wasn't too busy then (2015), but now gets extremely busy even before dawn.

I got a discount on my Hotel room as I was promised a room with a view and I couldn't see any of those things :)
