Just thought I would take my hat off to these guys and girls.......Okay! They are not full time Police Officers and I think they get a bit of a raw deal when it comes down to it. over the last number of days I have been out and about and seen the invaluable work that these people contribute to the local community, both by their presence and having a "friendly Word" with a few possible trouble makers, but today I seen not one but two act of their professionalism. The first was when a local store reported a local drunk lying in the doorway obstructing customers, The lady and gent in blue, assisted the guy to his feet and then took him over to a seat, where one of them popped into a sandwich bar and got him something to eat and drink and they sat with him until such times that he felt ok......then shortly after, I witnessed a gathering of 3 PCSOs milling around and having a general chat, when suddenly one of them broke ranks and took off down the street to apprehend a guy who walked out of a well known Pharmacy....She stopped him and immobilised him whilst the nearest full time police officer arrived..the guys pockets where full of stolen items from the pharmacy..... WELL DONE TO THE UNSUNG HEROES OF THE PCSO.........

Yup, I agree. We have a wonderful woman called Julie who just seems to be in the right place at the right time, is always smiling and always has time to chat, so she picks up on the locals worries or concerns.

She is also a wonderfully warm and engaging person who seems to deal with problems yet remain charming. As we approach Christmas there is major uncertainty about their job security and the 24th was being touted as the day they'll find out if they are keeping their jobs - I for one hope they do.

They are all awesome, but should be trained and paid as Police Officers!!

Then they'd be police officers not PCSOs.
For many it's what they prefer.

Indeed but many many more apply when there are police vacancies.

Also this would then mean they could be the same and do proper neighbourhood policing and community beat work

You think they don't do proper work as they are?

You think they don't do proper work as they are?

of course they do, but its policing work.

The 2 examples above.
1. This is what a police officer could have done.
2. A police officer could of made the arrest/detention etc. Instead of waiting.

I used to supervise a team of them in a city centre, they're a great asset. Mainly because they don't get tied up with paperwork and other commitments that take them off the street. Some of them are exceptional in gaining local intelligence, they play the role of the local beat bobby that is becoming extinct. And they are also good value.

Not denying they are an asset, nor am I denigrating the work they do, BUT, the statement above should really apply to the Police officers, so THEY can get on with the job instead of the paperwork!
PCSO/hobby bobbies were brought in to assist the police at busy times, but they are now relied on too much & are a cheap option at the expense of police officers.

The younger of my two nephews, is currently in training as a PCSO with a view to being a police officer later on down the line (he works part/nearly full time in the local Sainsburys to provide an income for himself). Given my seaside location, I'm sure he'll come across some interesting sights.

@Ian D J

I was down in folkestone when I witnessed all the great work.....

Hope he enjoys the job & sincerely hope he is enrolled as a PC sometime in the future.

The biggest problem atm is the financial restraints & cutbacks re recruiting, which may well hold him back unfortunately. If he is prepared to wait some time while gaining experience, he may well get a lucky break though. Good luck to him. (y)

Its a nice idea but unfortunately the reality is that the paperwork and other commitments that keep PCs busy and away from the public will never reduce significantly. I'm not sure PCSOs are over relied on, at least not in my experience.

The Govt over relies on them. Cheaper policing.

Why don't they get the pcso's doing the paperwork while the police are out policing? :D

And just to add; PC's time away from the public IS being reduced significantly ;)

It makes perfect sense to me to have non warranted civilians as part of the police no need to have everyone at the same level.

Which is exactly why we need an appropriate number of them so we don't loose that invaluable public contact. It's a shame we are in this position but this is the reality we are facing.

Then again isn't crime coming down, and also shifting to many other forms that traditionally weren't there.

Recorded crime is decreasing. Is crime decreasing, doesn't feel like it. Is demand on police decreasing, definitely not. Terrorism, 'cyber' crime, child protection, vulnerable adult protection, management of anti-social behaviour, offender management are all placing extreme demand on us.
Recorded crime is frankly an awful indicator of demand, however its one that this government uses to justfy reducing police budgets.

Not just this government, don't forget when it was introduced. ;)

Especially when certain echelons of police management are making a concerted effort to make sure crime reporting is either downgraded to lesser offences or not even reported as a crime...

If you replaced the amount of PSCOs with Police officers then the numbers would not be depleted by paperwork.

PCSOs also have to supply statements, for incidents they are involved in, they also have to attend court etc. Interviewing they don't do, but that's not a huge amount of time.

Its simple there is not enough staff in the entire police force.

There must be enough police officers, the Conservatives say the 17000 they have cut since coming to power still isn't enough and May and Osborne still want more cuts, a figure of another 5000 is considered their minimum target.

There must be a PC on every street corner we have so many .

Aye Theresa just wants to pass everything to G4S doesn't she? Wonder why? :muted: :schtum:

Even if there was one on every street corner, it just wouldn't be required. The landscape has changed significantly, the skill sets required have changed significantly....It isn't just a numbers game...

And @Dave1 come on, they haven't cut 17,000 officers since last May. That is very disingenuous of you.

In coalition with the Liberal Democrats b

So are you trying to say the Conservatives weren't in power from 2010?

What party were the Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary from?

I appreciate that a coalition may be a new experience to the British people, but the clue is in the word ;) over and out.

Nope, I think many understand the last Conservative LibDem coalition better than you do, especially if you are suffering delusions that the LibDems had any real control over the Treasury or the Home Office.

Answer the question, after the 2010 election, what party were the Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary from?
