Question to any of you who have moved platform from PC to a Mac AND to those who are die hard Mac users too............

If you had Lightroom and felt happy with it would there be a benefit moving over to 'Aperture' (In my case when thinking of getting a new iMac?

I currently have it on my PC and wonder the merits  (if there are any) of having Aperture pre installed when moving to a Mac.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Probably not to be honest if your happy with it!

Try the free trial of aperture on the mac when you get it. I tried it but prefer lightroom, although aperture is cheaper!

Adobe have just released a beta for lightroom 3 aswell.....

If you're used to Lightroom and like it, stick with it when you move over to the enlightened side.

I've tried both LR and Aperture and much prefer LR to be honest. Its a personal thing but IMO..... if it ain't broken don't try to fix it!

Moved to Mac 10 months ago, took LR with me, as I preferred it to Aperture.
Don't forget the LR licence is cross platform. So if you have LR on the PC (like me) you just have to install the Mac version and the same s/n works

I made the move and did switch. I really like Aperture, have to say I do prefer it. Horses for courses but if you are happy get a license transfer and continue to use lightroom on your mac.

They have beta for 3 out, but am sure Aperture is very close to being upgraded as well, now the other products are out of the way. Hope Aperture upgrade is going to be as good if not better than LR3.

I tried the Aperture when v2 of both came out, but I was used to Lightroom already so stuck with it, the upgrade from Lightroom 1 to 2 would have been much the same as buying Aperture. If you already have Lightroom it probably isn't worth forking out for Aperture, but if you are thinking about upgrading Lightroom it may be worth trying both.

Thanks for all the replies

For the feedback I think I'll stick with Lightroom and probably do the trial of Aperture. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on some 'Wow' function that Aperture might have had.

This is very subjective I know but to those who have tried Lightroom on both platforms, does it run any better/faster/smoother on a Mac?? TBH I hope my CS3 does :gag: as thats part of the (possible) move over.

I've just aquired an old mac from my friend who has been trying to convert me - I wanted to see if I could get on with it first before I take the plunge.

What do you make of the differences from pc-mac?

SS

Not gone there yet but might take a peek in the Apple shop over the weekend to see if they have any of the new iMac's in yet??

Wouldn't mind seeing how good :bonk: the new 27" screen is.

I've tried both, and use Aperture... I personally prefer the results, although I do miss the presets in LR, not impossible to reproduce in Aperture, just not so easy.

As to performance, there doesn't seem to be much in it between them.

I bought Aperture and STILL switched to Lightroom ! I very much prefer it but you can try both for free and decide for yourself.

Lightroom runs about the same on either PC or Mac. It's possible that it may run faster on Mac due to the fact you may have a better processor, more RAM etc. Also LR runs in 64bit on a Mac.

You can't simply move CS3 to to a Mac. Adobe will allow one cross platform change, however it needs to be the current version. So when you convert, you'll need to buy the upgrade. Not that complicated, Adobe customer service will help you out, basically they sell you the upgrade and you get a full version CD. Takes about 7 days to sort out. Plenty of time for you to run the trial version and change over.

Aperture is very capable and I used it for about two years up to about three months ago. I've moved over to LR on the Mac and I actually prefer it. If you're already a LR user then there's not really much that would be improved by going to Aperture.

Welcome to the world of Macs btw :)
