I'm not an expert on PC Sync connections and Garry will have more experience in that area but my field is electronics. It would seem strange that the PC sync connection would be protected but the hotshoe wouldn't....... I am happy to be wrong though.

It's almost definitely just another way of connecting to the same circuit. If it's a silly voltage it'll fry it whether connected via shoe, PC cord or a bit of wet string. The only way to protect it would be to use a Safe-Sync device, or with a radio or optical trigger.
That said, the international standard for trigger voltages says that modern cameras have to be able to cope with 24V, which most can. If it's got a PC connection it's less likely to be a wimpy Canon (Canons are rated to a pathetic 6V) so you might be ok...

Are you talking about a separate adapter that sits on the hot shoe and gives you a PC sync connector? If so I would contact the maker to be honest.

It is a jessops hot shoe adapter, so the shoe has a pc sync cable coming out of it. The flash a a metz - bought of another tp member and collecetd today. It does come with an extra optical trigger, but just thought i would ask.

Logic says (to me) that if the PC connection is going through a hotshoe adapter then it will be as weak as the weakest link, the hotshoe.
My understanding is that the hotshoes contain a foil carrier that isn't capable of carrying much more than 24v, but that PC sockets are more ruggedly wired. This site has some interesting info
