Hi all,

Long story short, broke PC, claimed, now have a £600 voucher to use in currys/pc world.

I'm struggling to decide on what to get?

I mainly edit macro photos and some portraits.

I store all my stuff on externals.

I use photoshop for my edits.

What would you buy?

Thanks

Matt

Most modern PC is enough to run photoshop but I would recommend buying a PC with SSD (Solid State Hard drive) as the main hd. It is a lot quicker to boot up and load application compare to the normal hard drive.

C drive as a SSD will only speed up your start up and opening programs It will NOT speed up using Photoshop, but a small SSD as a scratch disk will help if needed with large files.
I run i7 with 16Mb with a 1Tb ssd and a 128Gb scratch disk, date is on a third drive 2Tb
The main thing for photoshop is a good graphics I have got a AMD R9 380 and this is much faster than my old one I had.
To test speeds I use a photoshop action (from Gavin Howey) my old was pc an i3 was running the action in 1:30 new i7 was then running it at 45sec now its down to 30sec
I am very happy with my set up win 10 64bit with twin Samsung 27in curved screens and Wacom

I'd avoid that like the plague.

The worst aspect is that it's a laptop built into a screen, and will be difficult & restrictive to upgrade. Only HD resolution (1920X1200 or more is nicer for editing) AMD quad core, 8GB RAM & 1TB HDD, plus when the thing needs replacing you will have to throw the screen away too. There's too many compromises for something you want to use as a working tool, although it would probably be OK as an entertainment device.

Good choice. Might be worth seeing if you can do a clean install of W10 when it comes if there's much HP bloatware onboard.

Nice one Matt. The ssd should be able to be upgraded if you need to. It helps massively having all your programs and working files on a SSD and then just store your pics etc on the HDD.

Enjoy...

I might go for one of those too.

If you're not constrained to Currys/PC World then you can probably do better for the money from somewhere like Novatech or a self build. If you are constrained by supplier then it's a nice machine considering the options.

Good point about a fresh install, or at least uninstall all of the HP crap that comes pre-installed.

I've been considering all options for about 6 months now and read several threads about the pros and cons of self build etc :D

6 months? you're probably out of date then :p
I know :D I hadn't looked for a few weeks to be honest and was surprised to see a selection of quad core PCs under £700 at PC World. Am just having a quick look at Novatech again before going out to work; I do have 2 x 1tb hdds and a 240 ssd I could use in a self build, but am just getting very lazy these days ;)

If I get this without the drives, it brings the price down to £450 - but now I see it MUST have a drive included

That'll do nicely, way more than enough grunt for PS etc, be sure to store the programmes on the SSD and data on the large drive. Also be sure to use the USB 3 sockets for all external drives.
Not sure why you say this Photoshop gains nothing from being on a ssd only the scratch drive is a gain.
