Hi all,
Anyone got any recommendations for really good quality pc speakers?
I've been using a Bose soundock which is a great sound but a bit bulky- I changed this for a Dell soundbar but find the sound not very good!
I was looking at the Bose companions but I've never listened too them in the flesh!

I'm just going to say it before anyone else does.. Bose are overrated. There, got that out the way.

What's your budget and any size requirements. Size and is the limit really. I've got Yamaha HS5 running off an optical DAC for example.
 
Yes I get that about Bose- got a pair of qc35's though and pleased with them!
I want something as small as possible - budget not a big issue although don't want to spend a fortune- doesn't have to be hi-fi quality just want a fairly decent sound
I was running a Bose soundock through a fiio dac and that was adequate quality but a bit bulky

What optical DAC are you using?
 
The b&w look perfect! Shame they’ve stopped making them

Not bad from what I remember, I originally used the Asus range of sound cards but was short lived I got quite a lot of noise off my psu running from the 3.5mm out. That's not to say anyone else will.

Sound quality is very good, lot of punch. Don't get the people that say needs a sub, seems fine to me.

Smsl sd793-ii, runs optical from the PC and coax from a chrome cast audio (via optical to coax converter). Is a nice little headphone amp to boot.

Thanks it is interesting what you note above about noise from the psu through the 3.5 jack.

I get a humming sound with my current crappy speakers and I think it may be the same thing as they only do it on the PC.

My gigabyte board has optical out via soundblaster 3Di so I am keen to utilise its capabilities.

I have a set of Bose Companion 5 speakers. The sound is phenomenal, and along with my 32 monitor are both superb for music videos and surround sound movies. These connect via usb and recognised as 5.1 speakers. Unfortunately though, you don't get the same performance connecting your output via the 3.5mm jack input. Nor does it allow hdmi input or digital input - so only really suitable for use with a pc / Mac / laptop via usb

Anyone got a pair they want to sell?
 
All the major speaker brands make active speakers now. All depends on budget.
 
Budget?

I ended up with KEF Eggs, they sound superb, a bit lacking with low volume bass, but the mids and highs are razor sharp.

I am selling them however, only because I have seemed to amass a collection of Sonos speakers around the flat now, otherwise I think they're about as good as you'll get for PC speakers.
 
I have the Bowers & Wilkins MM1’s also. Great speakers, shame if they’ve discontinued them.

There's a pair for sale on AV Forums but the guys wants £200 on plus collection.
Might be worth getting in touch with him though.

Still available NIB for £250 from a shop on ebay with the link I posted.
 
I would go active and make sure they support the new blutooth APT-X standard at least 4.1 then they are future proofed.
