PC Screen capture software

Does anyone know of any safe free screen capture software out there that my daughter and I can use for a project?

Ah, should have been more clear, sorry. I was meaning capturing video of the PC screen - similar to like they do in Youtube videos.

VLC media player has a capture mode.

VLC is good and easy to use, as is Movie Maker and Aviemux.
