hi folks, PCs aren't really my forte...

having a problem with my monitor (Samsung 215tw - few years old). It's started showing flickering 'jaggy' lines across the screen. I'm not sure its a problem with the monitor itself as when I press down on the DVI cable where it connects into the back of my PC, the problem goes away (however, when I don't press lines come back). Suggests to me it may be a problem with the cable, or graphics card? Anyone had this problem?

I'm looking to upgrade the PC in a month or so anyway... have got £400 to get something (going to keep the monitor hopefully). Anyone suggest a decent spec to go for? I'll be using it for image processing (large stitched images), web browsing, possibly some HD video processing, listening to mp3s. Have already got a 1.5TB external drive so hard disk space isn't too important...

Any suggestions would be most welcome! :)

Check the graphics card is actually plugged into the pc properly (it's in a slot inside) they can and do sometimes work loose due to viberation knocks etc. if you don't know how get someone who does know to check for you, and remember to unplug from the mains first, just for safety.
Next check the cable, it sounds like one of these two things from the discription (although it could be other stuff too)

not sure what camera you're coming off but for stitched comps and hd video you'll find a dedicated/gaming graphics cards with on-board memory and at least 4-8mb ram a big help. sataII or usb3 connectivity/drives will help with data transfer but doubt you'll find a new set up for £400. if you know someone who is IT savvy and can build it for you via components then definitely worth asking. ultimately it's an investment but if £400 is your top then perhaps consider second hand
