Hi all

I have seen this happen on a few occasions over the past couple of years.

It used to happen at any time whilst using the PC but of late has been happening shortly after boot up. What I see is the lights on my mouse are/go out and the screen is frozen with the cursor stuck.

The mouse is the MS Trackball Explorer 1 and have had it going back to my W2K and W7 days. There are no W10 drivers but it has on the whole behaved itself with  as I recall running it now in W8 compatibility mode.

It is just getting more & more annoying :(

I have yet to get to the bottom of what might be the cause e.g. the mouse itself having a dying & intermittent fault??? NB it is USB connected.

TIA for any thoughts & insights :)

Have you tried unscrewing the base and giving it a clean? I used to clean mine until I got an optical.

Had this with my last PC (win7). Individual USB ports would stop working.
Are you able to swap the mouse to a different port?

If you are referring to cleaning out the ball and sockect (so to speak), as mentioned this is a Track Ball not a conventional mouse. And yes I clean the ball socket as needed but the loss as dust does collect and affects the smooth running of the cursor.

But this behaviour is not related to it's cleanliness.

A good point and I think I have previously changed the USB port(s) but will shift it again

The behaviour is odd, as the driver and software are up to date....though not W10 supported. Plus the freezing, other than of late just post boot up, is random in regard to when & how often it might happen???

The lights on the Trackball going out does suggest(?) a power issue or hardware failure of some sort???

Time to get a new mouse? I have found they do not last forever and if the obvious fixes do not work a new one is the simplest solution.

I see that it is a Microsoft mouse / trackball ....

you need to let the updates take hold, Microsoft issue them about once a week :exit:

You may be right, this Trackball is some many years old.

As I have the Logitech MX Keys keyboard, I have my eye on the MX Ergo Trackball. The prime functional difference is that this one is a 'finger controlled ball' and all(?) other now available including the MX Ergo are 'thumb balls'.

Plus, as I already have the Logitech Unifying USB Receiver in place for the MX Keys, it is my understanding that for connection purposes I do not need to 'add another'!

Yes, that's exactly what the unifying receiver means. I have a Logitech Craft keyboard and bought an MX Master mouse which gave me 2 receivers. One is plugged int he desktop on channel 1, the other in the laptop on channel 2. Keyboard and mouse both swap perfectly.

They also use channel 3 via Bluetooth to my tablet :)

You deserve an upgrade..
