Yes
running out of disc space...only got 8 gig left, what do i need to do?
tried the usual compression & clean-up...
will i have to format drive? if i do that, i will lose all my programs... so don't want to go there really...
all my photos are on separate drives, so dont know where all this space went  280 GB ?
another thing is, my drive is split into two ,its still got 200 GB left on it? so could i just drag my files from C drive to this partition?
dont know a great deal about pcs..I only get by....

8gb is fine if you are talking purely about your 'C' drive.

Yes you would lose all your programs, if you format the 'C' drive you will also have to reinstall Windows and all applications.

No not really, depending which file you're talking about. Applications are installed, you cannot just move the programme files afterwards.

Depending on the applications you use, you could alter the 'preferences' to move the location that the application uses for it's temporary files, ie Bridge/Photoshop cache to the spare 200gb partition

If you could provide more info, operating system, total number of hard drives plus how they are partitioned then we could offer more detailed advice on the best way to go.

Paul.

Depends if 8gb is under 10% of the total disk size, if so you'll start running into performance issues. In this case it's not but windows can get cranky when running low.

You mention it's partitioned, any reason for that? You could roll that partition into the main one, or move your documents etc to the other partition. Or buy another hard drive for storage.

At the start menu type

computer management

By the time you have typed 'comp', computer management should appear on the menu above. Click it to open the program.

On the left hand side of the management program click on disk management (it's under storage).

there you will see a list of your hard drives and if a drive has partitions they will be shown too.

If your boot partition (C:) is running out of space but another partition on the same drive has plenty of space they can be resized.

You shrink the one with spare space then enlarge the one that is too small. messing around like this is a great opportunity to royally screw things up so don't try it unless you have full backups and are prepared for the worst to happen.

Computer management can do it but you will need to right click it on the start menu and 'run as administrator' rather than run it normally.
Found one how to here.
