Since I changed my content to access a certain members homepage (he shall remain nameless unless the mods require it) I have been unable to search for anything in ANY engine.

It finds results for my request then when I click on the link it brings up an Ad for another totally random website or more seriously it redirects me to an adult search platform for many other adverts.

I have run McAfee security scans twice and nothing shows up on the scan.

Does anybody have any ideas how I can revert to normal settings.

I have never had this problem before.

I have put my security contents level back to where they were before this happened.

Life without a search engine is like living without my ????? .................................. memory.

Please help.
 
Sounds like browser redirection.
Try some anti-spyware software like AdawareSE and Hijackthis to start with.
If you can find out which particular nasty you have been infected with you can find out how to repair the damage.
 
Sound to me you've unwittingly activated some spyware on your PC. Using IE? (I would say yes)

best thing I can suggest (and would recommend to anyone else who doesnt use it) to Download and use firefox. Much better browser and where most of the "improvements" for IE7 came from (tabbed browsing etc).

Once you've downloaded and installed FF get a good spyware detector adaware is good (and free) dl it here and you'll hopefully be able to remove whatever is screwing with your system.

In the event it doesn't find anything or you dont want to install FF (madness but your choice) you can restore your PC to a previous time (on Windows XP that is) and should get rid of the settings/application that is causing the problem.

Failing that its a complete reinstall which can be (although rare) the only solution in some cases and tbh with the amount of updates MS gives us you should really do a fresh install every 12 months, when I rebuilt my works pc I couldn't believe how much faster it was (bootup time, system tasks etc).

If I install firefox would all my existing browser stuff (links, virusscan and outlook) still work?

I am loading an adware remover now. I will try and let you know the results.
 
Spyware Doctor is by far the best spyware prog I have used to date. If you're a Blueyonder broadband customer you can get it free from Google as part of their Google Pack.

you should be able to import your bookmarks from IE usinf the import command in the file menu
 
I like spybot- search and destroy seems to dig them all out, you will be shocked at how many little critters there are in you computer. also make sure u dnt have any more than 1 anti-virus running as they will conflict and cause holes in the firewall.
