So Ive been meaning to post this for a while and finally took some quick photos...

This build took a surprising amount of time, not so much to put together but more to specify the optimal hardware config for the motherboard and case.

This is an aluminium ITX build (Always loved the original mac pro cheesegrater). Ive owned lots of mac pro/ imac so wanted something that looked similar but was smaller and could deal with modern hardware.

Please excuse the phone quality/distortion!

Spec:
3600X with stock cooler
1660 Twin Fan GTX
32GB LPX 3200mhz
ROG Strix B450-i ITX (RGB off, but its pretty chilled when its on and not crazy RGB!)
Riotoro Enigma 650w PSU
1TB Rocket NVME
512GB Rocket NVME
960GB Integral SSD
4TB HGST
3x Be quiet! 120mm
Case size 355 H x 190mm W x 380mm Deep

Hi

Looks very nice, what mobo and CPU are you running?

Thank you

Wow, very powerful PC.

Oh, if anyone's wondering, the front removable alu panel hides the other 2x 120s, one stacked on top of the other. Temps are decent even though its not a mesh front or water cooled, something I was aiming for and fairly difficult to achieve with a quiet build.

I’ve got the exact same case but really struggle with temps but I have squeezed a 3800x and rtx2080 in! I tend to remove the lower screws and tilt the bottom of the glass screen open to ventilate which helps enough to allow lower gaming temps.

I only have one case fan plus a 240 rad that exhausts out the cheese grater!

Just a week ago I wouldn't have had a clue if this was even a good system or not, now I can identify all the parts :) so cheers for that, been learning loadds since I decided to get myself a new desktop. It's not going to be as beastly as this one but it'll blow my 8yr old laptop away at least.

I'm either going for a Ryzen 2600 or 3600, with the Rx 580 8GB Gpu, 16GB RAM and a 500 or 512 GB SSD

Nice build! That 2080 is a beast, no wonder you struggle a bit with temps. Good thinking removing the screws a bit, is your case fan an inlet?

Thats a really good setup, remember the X model comes with a better stock cooler and about 3-5% faster out the box, if its a £20-25 difference then imo its worth it.

I like that case, what is it?

The last of my parts arrived this morning, so will be commencing the build this week.

Similar spec list to mine.. 2600X, RX580, 16gb 3000 ram, m.2 SSD + HD

Its a MetallicGear Neo Mini V2, its surprisingly cheap for the quality, I also looked at some other metal case like the Raijintek and Dan case.

The Neo also comes in ATX.

Cool, post it up when youre done.

Will do, it'll be in a Phanteks P300 case, but my mate is 3D printing a new front panel for me, with hexagonal vents for increased air flow. So that will be painted up and added at some point in the future.

Sounds cool, will remember to have a look.

I have a 140mm case fan at the front and from memory it is an inlet fan.

There seems to be conflicting views on this, some reviewers suggest that the stock cooler is plenty for the 2600 as it tends to run cooler than many other cpu? Like this guy for example, seems to be knowledgeable, have watched a number of his vids now - much like you suggest he says if it's only $20 more get the X, otherwise put the money elsewhere. In my case it's £32 difference, so I'm putting it to the SSD instead, I think that's a better option?

He talks about the difference between the 2600 and 2600x inc cooling from 4:30 onward here

Yes I agree - conflicting info everywhere. I've also noticed prices have gone up since lockdown started. I paid £120 for the 2600x, the same retailer now lists it at £145!

There is always a 'just spend a little bit more for ......" option on every component. I added at least £100 to my build that way, but you have to draw the line somewhere and have to do what makes sense to you and your wallet!!!

There will be conflicting views because there are variables like case size, fans, airflow, people will run different setups. I knew my ITX case was going to be quite small so I wanted the better stock cooler or I wouldve added a bigger cooler to a regular 3600 at additional cost. Also, when I got my 3600X it was £25 more than the 3600, as it included a better cooler and a free game worth £30 = no brainer.

Id take that £32 in your case and spend it on the SSD as your build is ATX so no issues with airflow.

Very true, mine started out at a 500-600 build... spent a lot more adding those little bits.

Yeah, I'm tying to be strict about my budget, I already plumped it up a bit. For one, I was initially building a system on a certain site, but they have gotten some terrible feedback around the net so going with CCL. Pricier, but they appear to be more reliable. I've upped the SSD, added the better wi-fi card [was thinking on just going usb but I imagine a built in card will be better?] added better RAM - at one point I was settling for a 1600, but I think the 2600 will be better for the likes of Lightroom. Drawing that line is tough, you always want that little bit more, but I think once I actually order it I'll be happy enough, it's done and dusted! and I can stop watching a billion spec videos :D

I've gotten most of my bits from CCL. No complaints.
I haven't bothered with WiFi, as it will be sited only feet from my router it will be wired.
For ram, I've read the faster the better for Ryzen, so have pushed that to 3000

Re ram, that's also what I've read.

I need WiFi as it'll be in the next room over from the connection, hopefully just the one hollow wall won't impede it too much. I'm going for 3200 ram, probably not a lot between it and 3000, on the build I'm choosing there isn't actually any 3000 option

Might be able to clock the 3200 higher at a later date if you want.

If you do have WiFi issues, there's the powerline thing that uses your house wiring. My son's Xbox upstairs runs on that perfectly.

Can you stack 2x 120s or 2x 140s for intake?
I can’t sadly due to the length of my gpu. In fact I specifically chose this case as it is the itx case that allows the longest gpu.

Guessing you cant fit a fan to the rear of the case either?

Wonder if flipping the 2 fans to intakes and the front to exhaust would work better, I think positive pressure relies on more intakes than exhausts. Perhaps when youre really bored one day you can try it

Where's the disc drive?

Will have a look into that if the wi-fi turns out to suck

Bit of a bummer with CCL here, when I go to place the order the earliest delivery date it will give me is 2.5 weeks - that's a bit more than 10 days, and at that I kinda hoped they'd get it done before that time even. I guess no rush in placing the order right now, will continue looking about see if I can get something sooner. My laptop really is on it's last legs here

Their delivery times have really extended due to reduced staff and increased demand apparantly. Unless you've selected a component that's not in stock?

Is there a way to tell if parts are OOS? If I opt for the priority build that one gives 10 days as earliest delivery so not worth it

Ahh, you're having them build it. I thought you were buying components for a self build, in which case each component page tells you the stock status and expected restock time if out of stock. I don't know about them building it, sorry.

I'm hopeless with any kind of wiring - I have a fair idea how it all goes together, from watching all of these individual parts vids - they often show how to build along side. Maybe a future project for me, but for a first decent desktop I just want that reassurance that if something is wrong, I have some come back.

It's a sensible approach. By the end of the week I'll know if it's one I should have taken too!
