Look at Dell 5000 or 7000 in 17"
I think a laptop is probably best if you description of use is in preference order. You can always add keyboard and monitor if you want the large display.
A friend just bought a HP from Currys and it is very slow.

Monitor wise, I have the following:

which I have been very happy with but do not know if still available.

a decent 24" IPS full RGB screen will set your around £250 ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-UltraSharp-U2415-Inch-1920x1200/dp/B00O9ZGI58 )
that doesn't leave much for the PC. I would go for an i5 current generation CPU with at least 8gb of RAM and 256ssd + 1-2 tb HDD. so you have to spend about £750 to get a decent desktop that will last 4-5 years

£500 is a tall order for a complete system with the kind of spec you'd want. If you're capable, a self-built machine using parts might be an economical route, as you can pick and choose where your money is going on each component. Overclockers is a food website for this, and you can ask on the forums for suggestions on exactly what to buy for any given task and budget.
I've never had good service from Scan. I'd advise avoiding them. Ebuyer are good.
