I'm selling one of my mountain bike on Facebook marketplace. I've just had someone who lives in Hertfordshire send me a message saying she is sending her son to pick the bike up 80 mile one way trip and wants to pay via PayPal £1800. No haggling no real questions about the bike. I feel something is not right I'm I right to be cautious or is there another way of finding out if they are genuine or best way to get paid.

Nope, Cash or bank transfer and the goods dont leave until I see the payment in my account, made someone wait 20minutes before I would let them leave with the item.

Also wont ever have them arrange for a courier.

I'd tell her (or he) that her son is welcome to collect in person as long as he brings a wad of crisp £20 notes.

I'd check those too.

They will start a claim with paypal saying they never received the goods and you have no proof of postage or delivery.

If they pay using the PayPal friends and family gift option is that not safe?

But £1800 and no questions and 80 mile trip is a bit suspicious.

I don’t really know how safe that is but I wouldn’t take the chance for nearly £2k.

Anybody wanting to pay that amount by PayPal are either legit and will want the protection that F&F may not give them or they are out to scam you. Either way they won’t want to pay using F&F

Safe for the seller yes as the buyer wave the right to claim

Video the person picking up the bike and taking it away would be my option :)

That’s means nothing in a PayPal claim. They will ask for proof of delivery via an online tracking service. They don’t care about a video you made.

For physical items:

  • Ship the item to the address on the Transaction Details page.
  • Respond to our requests for documentation and other information within the required timeframe.
  • Provide us with valid proof of shipment or delivery.

Also regarding F&F being safe. That’s not entirely true. I remembered reading somewhere that somebody had a F&F payment reversed hence my earlier comment about how safe that option was.

After a quick google it is true that F&F payments are not eligible for buyer protection via PayPal but if that payment was funded by the buyers debit/credit card, there is nothing to stop the buyer claiming through their bank. PayPal will not hesitate to claw the money back from you.
